I have seen many that were highly educated let common sense go out the window. However, I have also seen many that get a lot of education, combine it with experience and common sense, and then become some of the best at management and leadership in the business. One thing I learned very quickly after starting college is the fact that many professors try to talk you into dropping common sense. They want everything looked at on book level. I have had many arguments with professors because I had experience, and could tell them from personal experience that their little book was way off mark (they do not like that).

Re: I just don't get it
My post was not intended to offend you. I think everyone understands that things have changed in the system over the last 20 years. My brother retired just 2 years ago. He was VERY proud of his job and he was a professional. He was educated, sincere and wanted to make a difference--which I believe he did. He went through strenuous training, saw constant changes in the system--was the best he could be. He put it out there and did his job with respect. I don't think anyone in his community, Lake Butler--Raiford, Florida area think badly of any of the corrections officers or law enforcement officers. They carry the load and they are well respected. In fact, this is an entire community of prisons so close knit that it is more like living among family than neighbors. And everyone has your back. If it weren't for the law enforcement/corrections community this area of Florida would be a ghost town. And yes, they do follow the "good ole boy" rules.
Your post sounds very sincere and devoted to the good. Your heart is in the right place. You have the devotion it will take to do an excellent job. Having said that, there are many professions that do not get the respect (or pay) that they deserve. How about teachers? How about nurses? Things are changing in society, but they are not changing fast enough. Until the power brokers stop seeing correction officers as "service" industry the State of California and all other states will be able to do whatever they see fit to balance the budget. You are right, the characteristic of todays Custody Officer is evolving, but it seems someone forgot to tell Washington. The inmates (or whatever the polite name is now) my brother protected "society" from are given more respect, medical treatment, mental health treatment, and have more civil rights than my brother did. I certainly don't know how to get it out there that this job is a calling. The job carries an unbelievable amount of responsibility; it takes toll on your emotional well being. I am proud of the job that my brother did, my family is proud of him, his community was proud of him. I also know the ramifications of his job. Part of the reason my brother is not here now is that after he retired he lost his sense of self. In this society we are defined by our professions. It is the truth. You know first hand what your sacrifices will be. This is not your first rodeo. I must have missed something on these posts. Where did the liar image come in? |

I have a burr under my saddle about psych tests, because, er, umm, somebody I know very well didn't pass a PD Psych test back in 1996. I, that is, ahh, this person was also honest on the test, and probably did not pass it because of that. I was very offended by the test because I am a Christian and there were a tremendous number of questions that were specifically directed at just what sort of Christian faith a person might have. Of course, I answered them truthfully. The test seemed to be trying very hard to determine if you really believed in God, the Bible, and the reality of Jesus Christ. Because of the way that the questions were framed, I got the idea that the way I was answering those questions would be regarded as abnormal. I have also heard that some people get weeded out (no pun intended) because they admitted to recreational drug use in their youth, never mind that it was 15-20 years prior to the test. That's really what I had in mind when I made the comment about lies, because I know for a fact that many people lie about that portion of the test. I regard myself as a dedicated professional, and I am always glad to know of others who regard themselves in the same way. |

I just came from McNeil Island yesterday and was at WCCW (not sure I could ever work there, my hat is off to the officers that can work in a womens correctional facility) a week and a half ago and the esprit de corps I witnessed is simply amazing. I know there are problems here and there, and that hiccups will occur from time to time. However, I can't put into words how much I am really proud to be apart of our organization. I gathered, for the most part, that the officers I have had the opportunity to learn from and observe to date, are truly dedicated, highly ethical, and morally fit. I would hope that I could help other good candidates like "Thursco" become a part of our team by inspiring him with other avenues or possibilities besides lying (unfortunately if there is something in his Psych Eval that prohibits his forward progress that may be a terrible misfortune). I am certain that there may be a chance there are few that may slip through the process because they did perhaps lie or were not completely honest about some things, however I cannot be convinced that this is norm in our candidates who have succeeded through todays selection process. So today, I was OC'd (straight shot on the eye)... lemme tell ya about truth serum! Perhaps this needs to be a part of the psych exam- one shot in the eye and if you lie to me you'll get another! |
