Re: WA DOC Hiring Practice

There are a couple of possibilities. I would call your recruiter/hr rep etc to find out. I think many of the facilities run their own CORE.

Or is there a Web site for Tacoma CJC?

Unfortunately for you, it will be run more like a college class then a corrections academy. The best knowledge will come with experience. Find good officers that you trust and learn from them. Good luck!

WSR, this beg's another question, I hope you do not mind (I am still the FNG)... If WADOC CO's are considered limited duty Peace Officers in the State of Washington and they do not attend the BLEA in Burien then does attending the the Tacoma CJC still earn WA CO's the same certification?

Also if it is run more like a classroom environment is there any firearms instruction and qualification? Do we go off site?

By the way thanks for the advice on learning... I will certainly follow your lead there.

Re: WA DOC Hiring Practice

Tacoma CJC is one of many locations where the CORE class has been held. CBCC, WCC, MCC, and WSP have also all had their own CORE classes going for some time. DOC has some idea that they want to consolidate these locations, which they may or may not actually implement. The only thing that may change is where this training is held.

When I started in 1997, DOC was still using CJTC in Burien. C/Os generally worked for several months before attending CJTC in Burien. With the CORE class, new recruits go through all training before ever working a day in a prison.

The CORE academy is different than CJTC, but CORE standards are officially equivalent to CJTC. A person who graduates from the CORE program can transfer to a city or county corrections position without having to go through CJTC. A DOC person who transfers basically just has to go through a bit of additional training in subjects such as Booking, Arrest, and Fingerprinting.

Washington DOC officers have very limited Peace Officer status. We only have Peace Officer status only in regard to Washington DOC inmates and only when we are on duty. Peace Officer status does not extend beyond that.

Washington DOC went to the legislature to get Peace Officer status for DOC correctional officers, but the Union shot it down. There were some technical reasons for that in regard to the specific legislation, but I was extremely disappointed that the Union did not bring forward alternate legislation that would have made Correctional Officers full peace officers.

That is rather interesting information. Does the limited Peace Officer Status apply to Community CO's (Parole/Probation Officers)?

Yes, the limited peace officer status applies to community corrections officers, also. Since they are dealing with offenders in the community, that status comes into play much more frequently for them.
