Opening a new IMU/SHU/Seg Unit

So, I am privileged, no blessed to be part of the team that will open Washington States newest and most secure Intensive Management facility.

Any advice on opening a Seg/IMU/SHU from the old hats here?

Also WSR, I read in the Everett Paper that your new IMU is supposed to be "green" and all that. Sounds like green means built like crap. I have the distinct feeling that once the inmates get comfortable in ours, we'll soon find many similar problems. They said that our sprinkler system is inmate proof, so we'll see about that.

I've never done it. But, I know that you will never get anywhere but in trouble by cutting corners.

Yeah I hear that. I'm kind of excited really, because we (I'm on nights so not as much as days) will get to set the precedent when it comes to the way it is run.

You will get to set the precedent if your management allows you to. I have activated 2 pens and performed a crap load of work in the SHU preparing it for activation, but, if your management does not allow you to open up strong, then its all for naught. If your cell doors will be grills, not much suggestions here. If you will have contained cell doors, have them install a plate at the bottom of the door that will go almost flush with the floor. That will help tremendously with the fishing. Also, have your facilities manager order some epoxy so you can fill in all the tiny cracks in the casement of the door. This will extremely minimize the chances of an inmate ****ting you down with that liquid cocktail he likes to make. Also, see if they can get a few of the food slot boxes installed for inmates who like to try to hijack their food slots. The boxes work wonderfully.

When the new IMU/Seg opened in Monroe, it was all hands on deck really. It wasn't anything different from the old IMU/Seg areas. The only diff is that the new computer system they have to operate the whole thing. We at MCC IMU have 8 staff and rotate positions every 2 hours. So yea, it isn't all bad. I like the IMU, but wouldn't work there on a reg basis. OT only. Good Luck.

I wish they'd let Seg be designed by someone who has actually turned keys and applied cuffs.

That would make to much sense.

Sense yes, but that would make things too easy.....they never want to make things simple and easy!
