Re: Opening a new IMU/SHU/Seg Unit

The biggest thing that would have helped us would have been for all shifts and supervisers to be on the same page. The same page regarding showers, yards, supplies, food, etc. Since we've opened in the last month, we've suited up many times and applied OC. We hit them hard with our administration backing us. We give them the bare minimum that they are entitled to.
As far as a green building, all of the toilets have signs that say "don't drink the water". Whatever that means. The sad thing is, some a'hole had to have done it to have someone make a sign.
Sprinkler heads pop off very easily. If their IMS level says they can have state issue, the sprikler heads go right in their socks.
I'm jealous that you get a good team, (if you were being sarcastic, that's funny too) Most of swing and grave yard were taken off of their bid posts and "institutional needs" placed at the IMU. That means poor bastards taken from MI3-close and placed in max. Many of which I know have never had to use retraints. Big difference.

Our 2nd shift has a lot of really good CO's. 3rd shift is a little suspect, it was filled with a lot of 12-18 month guys with some old IMU transfers and 1st shift is almost all 12-18 month guys. But luckily most of the group is close anyway so it should be cool.

All of our officers are good people, but experience levels make some stand out from others. We have DT instructers working along side people that probably don't know how to properly load their cuffs. Things are getting better. Good supervisers. Good QRST equipment. Lots of OC.

Sprinkler heads torn off. Speaker boxes torn off. Windows busted out. Shower doors kicked open. You can't run the toaster and the microwave at the same time or the fuse blows. Two different keys to open the cuff ports because why would all of the locks be the same. Plaster flaking off of walls......where do we start? The outside paint looks pretty cool. The entry rug with our logo on it looks great. The QRST room has nice elbow and knee pads......

Just goes to prove that NOTHING is inmate proof.

YIKES! So by "Green" they meant "crappy".

So, a little update. We've been up but empty for the last week. The place hasn't started falling down yet, but we also don't have inmates. We have found lots of stuff that's going to make for some FUNNNN times for the first few months. We officially put the smack down on crime starting Monday, so I'll keep you updated on how things go down on our end. I'm sure we're going to have a lot of the same problems, minus the speaker boxes, they were smart enough to build those into the walls.

I'll pass your lessons learned to my guys when I go back to work Monday night.

Stay safe.

Put timers on the showers if they are not in each cell. Put food slot covers on each food slot so they cannot take it hostage. If you fit 150 inmates in SHU, and you only have say 10 inmates, do not give them their own cell, double them up from the beginning. Just because you have the space doesnt mean they cell alone unless they have SEPS issues etc. Do not put most responsibilities on 1 shift. D/W should only have to do showers, Rec, and cell change, . E/W should do phone calls, cell clean up, law library, and clothing/linen exchange. D/W has enough to worry about with unit team, exec staff, DHO etc.

Also do all phone calls in the first week. Yes you can get them all done. ANyone that comes in after that has to wait 30 days to make another call. This way instead of doing calls every night, you do them all in the first week, and are done for the month. If the inmate comes in on the 25th, yes he gets lucky and gets a call 5 days later, but then he is done for the month. I hope this helps

Oh we have computer controlled showers, toilets, and sinks. I can make their shower 30 seconds or 30 minutes.

We're Super Max, so no double houses here. Our guys don't play well with others. Our system is set up fairly well, our new building is in addition to our preexisting Super Max.

Yeah dude, we're a state prison not a jail. If we didn't give a phone call for 30 days, two things will happen. 1. They will burn that place to the friggin ground and 2. Every court from here to Timbuktu will kick our a$$.

We do phone calls during yard time.
