Time for me to bitch and moan about the VT DOC (especially our supervisors).

An excellent example of how worthless the S1's (Supervisors) in VT are:

A while back I did a tour of my unit and saw what I thought to be 3 inmates in a cell (3 man cell), one on bottom left bunk, one sitting on floor, one on top right bunk. I'm standing in the day room and all of a sudden an inmate that lives in the cell I just checked walks out of another cell. I'm confused, since I thought I just saw him sleeping in his cell. We have a little chat about it and it turns out he made a "dummy" out of blankets. I go and talk with my S1 about it and he has no advice for me. I know that it's a DR (disc. write up) but I'm not 100% sure which one. So I end up writing what equates to a DR for having escape tools. Last I checked that inmate is still in the unit. Never did any hole time. The S1 should have grabbed him right then and taken him straight to the hole.

There are of course many more, but that one's just been bothering me for awhile.

Well, THAT supervisor may have been wrong, but please don't lump all supervisors in one bunch.

That offender SHOULD have been locked up. That is considered a major violation im MO which could result in custody level elevation. But the important thing is YOU DID YOUR JOB. Continue to do so. If you let this bug you to the point that you quit doing your job, then that makes you wrong.

So, you keep doing what you are supposed. Try and shrug off what the bad supervisors do and look for encouragement from the good ones.

Thanks, I am trying to follow my own advice right now. I, too, have a supervisor (or two or three).

There have been many incidents where a VT Supervisor has failed any expectation of being a supervisor, heck of being a CO.

Other states may be different, even other facilities in this state, but I know the ones at my facility are worthless. Also at the facility my wife works at.

Time to go cook dinner now.

I also recently had a time where I was working one of the FDC (jail) units and a series of incidents happened over the course of a few days where a few inmates should have gotten locked up, but for some reason didn't. It makes it much harder to manage, because they are constantly pushing the envelope to see how far they can go. It started with an inmate refusing to stand for count (day one), then with one inmate refusing to lock down (day two), then a whole tier refusing to lock down (day three). It can be frustrating...

Also remember that some supervisors have certain inmates "on thier payroll" if you know what I mean.....we have teflon snitches at my facility where no matter how many times you write them up, nothing happens because they are giving up that good info to the highers. I have learned in my ten years on the job not to let mishandled write ups bother me and never make anything personal unless it is a direct attack on me from the supervision and/or administration. Aparently, there are alot of things that go on in the ranks of supervison that we as "floor" officers do not know or have a need to know. (so I've been told a few times). So hold your head up high and continue to do your job....

UGH I HATE THAT CRAP. If offenders want to give me info, great (although usually it is to try and gain favors OR to throw the spotlight off of them).

I had to put my foot down a couple months ago with a longtimer that had managed to be singlecelled almost constantly. Once I realized what he was doing, I told him You knock the crap off or I will move you out. He didn't, I did. Admin didn't agree with me, but then the lying bastard writes to the Warden saying that HE always gave me info about the drug dealers and bad guys in the house. Sure, he gave me info, but none of it ever amounted to anything.

I have a co-worker who has snitches and is comfortable using them. She manages it well but I am too chicken. lol I have seen too many staff get caught up and I won't chance my career for one good bust.

Oh, yeah, I will NEVER give a guy a break on a violation in exchange for info. If he deserves a violation and a sanction, he gets it. If he has info, he can share it. I once walked away from a guy who wanted to give me info, "if you can work something out with my transfer." (He didn't want to be transferred.) I said, "I am done with you. Take him back. He's got nothing for me." He wrote me a note the next day begging to talk again, but I don't play that so he sat til his transfer date. All alone. Without my affections. lol

I can sleep every night knowing that I am not breaking the rules, nor do I bend them. As for Admin's opinion of me, "You need to look at the big picture." My big picture is my career. THE END

Now I know who this is. By the way that inmate ended up going downstairs and got moved outta there due to points about 2 weeks ago, and I wonder how your had got busted
