I have just under 600 now. I would have had more, but diabetes and the occasional other things like death in the family and what have you just kills it. Oh well, I think I would rather get the full value of it that way than to be given a mere 8% on it.

Re: Sick Leave Payback for the Fed's

i was fortunate to retire under the csrs almost 4 1/2 years ago, and i only knew of one staff member who had over a years sick leave which he got a lousy 2 percent credit! gods only knows how long he would have to live to come out ahead of just taking it! but it was important to him so thats what matters i reckon!!!!!!

Re: Sick Leave Payback for the Fed's

I have 1100 hours of Sick Leave

Will earn 830 before I retire.

240 days of "Extra" vacation time to some people.

I bang in for "Legit" reasons, not because I want a day off for some party or whatever. I admire Cal Ripken.

I dont bang in a lot, but the closer I get to 50 I "Cant See" coming to work on the regular as Ive been doing. There is little motivation except for my own sense of integrity.

The $7000 plus dollars Moran is trying to get me sounds like it might be a nice enough check to send me off to retirement and keep me trudging to work. Otherwise I might convieniently get sick alot in the future

There are young officers who "Bang" everytime they save up 8 hrs, and have no leave on the books, who could be actually motivated to come to work like they are supposed to.

How in the H can you be in your 20s and bang in twice a month, when Im in my 40s, and rarely do it. Something is wrong with that picture. I hope Morans plan can fix it.

Re: Sick Leave Payback for the Fed's

I think people forget that custody people basically have to bang in when they have a personal emergency.

I mean, if no one can watch your kid and you're are a single parent, or your car is dead broke in your driveway, they won't grant annual leave and are itching to mark you AWOL, what else can you do?

Non custody just can take annual leave here and there (single days) and custody staff have to use sick leave.

So as long as people can't be honest to get a day off for a legitimate problem, sick leave will continue to be used as an alternative.

Re: Sick Leave Payback for the Fed's

For a long time at my Institution, there were almost monthly mandates for the staff on days and way more for those on the off-shifts. If you're lucky enough to have a M-F 8-4 job, that's great. You'd only need to use a few hours for dr's appointments and such. Right now, we have barely any overtime and are fully staffed. So when we ask for the day off, chances are we'll get it. There's a lot of "fluff" on the roster, so Management can allow for unforeseen FFLA days.
As for the time when I retire (at least another 17 years), I'm not so sure they will be able to give us a penny for any sick leave. I just plan on using it. One of the Lt's at my work has less than 300 days left and he's probably banging in once every month. Perhaps he is just waiting for the right body alarm.
Who knows? It's scary, though...retirement. I always feel like I won't have enough in TSP and maybe Social Security will be defunct. Let's hope not.

.......

The problem is not just in the BOP. All govt agencies have this problem. I worked for a lady in the AF who was close to retirement and burned her Sick Leave so much I was almost doing her job. She used to call me from home and tell me what to do

All of us have issues that pop up that dont fit the Sick Leave scenario, and our supervisors need to be more accomodating. Obviously one way or another we wont come to work anyway. It would be better if the Lts. just gave us the day off - but they wont or cant.

There are people who are refusing to face the possibility that they might actually get sick in the future. So they bang when they want a 3 day weekend - it makes no sense. Then they get in a car accident or their kids gets sick and now they are begging for Annual Leave donations. Seen it too many times.

Not all Non Custody people like myself (ISM) have it is good as you make it seem. If I asked for a day off or leave, somebody has to cover me while Im gone. Otherwise they have to hire OT, much like Custody. I dont think it is that much easier.

Re: Sick Leave Payback for the Fed's

I just got my T/A sheet today and I am now a whopping 296 hrs of S/L in the hole. I had major Back Surgery last summer and used 196 hrs of my own and then had the rest advanced. My injury, I broke my back at work in 2001 Is covered by OWCP but they could not guarrantee me a paycheck on time so I went this way. Once I am done taking S/L because of severe pain I will have OWCP pay there 75% and I will pay my 25% and I will get it all back eventually. I will be having another back surgery in a couple of weeks because the fusion part of my 1st surgery did not take, needless to say I am in constant pain, some days good, some days bad. This time I am going on LWOP, supposedly I will be bringing home more than my regular check. we'll see. The moral of the story save some S/L you might just need it.
