Our warden is using cameras to monitor staff. Has anyone had this problem and dealt with it? Any advice or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Cameras are not to be used to evaluate staff. File on him. I will get back to you if you want me to on this.

Re: Warden using cameras on staff.
I work in a county facility and its not unusual for each cell block to get one or two calls a day from a supervisor or unit manager asking them why inmate so and so is doing this or that. At the county level, I don't think there is anything we can do about it even with a union.....we just tolerate it and do our jobs the best we can. I will say that the the last UOF I was in, (breaking up a fight, hands on) happened on a Saturday and Monday morning the Director of Security had me in his office while he critiqued the tape. I didn't get in any trouble for anything but I got a lot of "You could have done this differently" and "I would have done it this way"...etc...etc...etc...he even had a copy of my report in front of him comparing it to the tape to be sure it was accurate......like I once heard an officer tell his supervisor in a movie "we have a split second to make a decision out there and you have all the time in world to rip it apart"..........such is life......I still get a paycheck.......

We have four cameras in SHU, connected to a DVR in Control (and they can be monitored in SIS). They only show staff, not inmates. We even call it the "GaryCam" system, after a particular staff member they tried to hang. The rec yard has one camera, not connected to a recorder, that is pretty much useless because of its location. Except for the visiting room, none of our other cameras cover inmates -- they all cover staff.

Re: Warden using cameras on staff.
I have heard that the camera at the front of our institution has been used in the past to monitor whether staff are leaving early. I haven't seen it for myself, so it could just be rumour.

Re: Warden using cameras on staff.
Why do they have cameras in stores, to monitor for shoplifters and I am sure they are used to keep an eye on their staff too, you can't honestly think that they are not using them to monitor staff in prisons either can you...they were supposed to be used to watch the inmates but from what I have heard more staff are getting nailed then inmates!!!

Get back to me on it. What case decided that?

Re: Warden using cameras on staff.
They installed cameras at our facility without negotiating it. We asked that if the cameras were there to monitor inmates that they permit staff to work in any area that is monitored by cameras to have access to those camera views so they could monitor the inmates in their area. Just a thought.
