Exactly the reason for me wanting to transfer. In addition, I can say that once I am out of this state, my intentions are to never see it again.

At Canaan, we have to pay the township 10 bucks a year........ the state started this OCCupational tax in the late 80's. Its weird! some towns have a right to work tax and its like a percentage of your pay goin to the local governemnt!

Re: Local Occupational Tax

Philadelphia and NYC have a 7% city wage tax. You have to pay that every pay check!

I have to pay city tax in Toledo. I want to say it is 2.25%, but I could be wrong.

Re: Local Occupational Tax

Cleveland is 2.0% to 3% depending on what area you live in. I lived in Parma and was paying 2.5%. Last year I moved out to a township (which are exempt from paying local taxes for living there) but you're still required to pay if you work in a CCA, RITA, or community such as Parma with a local tax division (which I don't).
Also you have to pay your taxes a year in advance by Ohio law. You pay in advance each quarter based on a projection of your previous years earnings. UNfrickinBelievable!!!
I went down to the tax division, wrote a check for 2400.00 and told the lady behind the counter to relate to the City Treasurer (who was out) that if he's never heard of anyone moving away due to excessive taxation then put my name on the top of the list.
Here's the bottom line, NE Ohio has the third highest tax burden in the country, and is in a very tight race with Detroit for being the most inept, corrupt, mismanaged, and poorest city in the country.
I tell these locals that if they enacted the same taxes on...say Oklahoma City, there would be rioting, burning of buildings and at the very least a new city government installed. They just look at me with big sheep eyes with no idea what the frick I'm talking about.
Oh well, sorry for the rant.

Re: Local Occupational Tax

People that come to Florida from any joint in NY or PA say they get a huge bump in pay since they do not have to pay city, state and federal taxes.

Correct me if I am wrong, this tax is used to pay for those on unemployment and welfare right? Seems kind of ironic that Occupational Tax dollars are being used to support those without occupations.
