Misuse of the computer

We have had a plethera of these cases at USP Lompoc. It seems the BOP is getting stringent on this. Is this problem cropping up elsewhere?

Yeah, they're after us too. They are also after staff at the FTC in Oklahoma City over computers. Additionally, there is absolute paranoia emmanating from Central Office over 30 minute checks in all BOP SHUs.

In the meantime they don't seem to care that dirty staff smuggling in tobacco & drugs is rampant. The Bureau Way is to persecute staff over trivia while allowing the corrupt to operate unhindered.

I asked my sister, who is an executive assisstant to the CEO of a major company what they do for misuse of computers. She says the standard in private business is, If the employee gets their work done, and does not damage the system, who cares? I think the BOP has staff mentality!

Lompoc is extrimely Anial about this but I get a **** load of Questionable emails from Co's at other institutions. I ask them what's the IT enviroment where they work. they say The things lompoc gives people days on the beach is colmmon practice @ there institution.
I think computer services needs to remove themself's from trying to be the correctional staff and the staff being the inmates in the computer world. Computer services needs to concentrate more on keeping the network up and less on what we are sending in our e-mails!!!!
just my thought..

Those folks are just trying to justify their positions is all. FLETC Instructors got into some trouble for sending jokes to people. Some how one of the jokes was sent to a person who was offended and that caused some issues with the people who had forwarded the joke. They of course were spanked. Like a previous poster indicated, have your friends send things to your private email account rather then your work email. They have the ability to go back several months to check your emails. Its better to be safe then sorry.

Re: Misuse of the computer

Playing devil's advocate, I'm curious on how the hell people can actually complain about computer services being upset that staff are misusing computers and so forth. As others have mentioned, do your Surfing, chain-mails, etc., at home, not work. Why take the chance of getting caught at looking at tasteless jokes at work, which could jeopardize your career, yet cost you a job somewhere else esp. the government? I can't trust the Gov. but to know that they have an eye on everything you (including on a computer) is simply insane. Back in the day, computers in a housing unit were never even thought of, but some Union folks thought it might be a Godsend to keep staff informed of our hitlist inmates (which I sort of agree), but it still does not help to maximize the security of the prison. To rebuke the claim of dirty staff, last year an officer printed inappropriate photos for inmates on the computer in the housing unit, and that staff member was fired for this.

Re: Misuse of the computer

Back in the old days at El Reno there was what was called a "six-pack hit." You put one on an inmate and the first staff member who got him locked up got a six-pack of his or her choice.

Computers were never needed.

But, in these days where you are as likely to be punished for doing your job as not, why do it? And if you don't risk doing your job, what the Hell are you supposed to do with yourself for 8 hours? Make friends with inmates?

Re: Misuse of the computer

I've got out of the habit of sitting in the office...

Walk and talk, walk and look...

I am considering letting my Novell lapse...

There was a recent incident where some porn was sent, so far the investigation has reached 27 institutions.

When we first got them, I had received some questionable items, deleted them and told the sender in person not to do this again, and warned them that it could turn around and bite them in the butt...

Our computer dept. is cool here, but I would not want to place them in a position to have to research my online or mail history... Could turn out to be bad for both, and cause hard feelings.

At work, play safe, just do work related things... Act like a clown when you get home, your computer, your time, your beer, your thoughts and ideas...

No one can say anything to you about it, not yet anyways...

Unless you go WAYYYYYYYY too far, like a certain member did here not too long ago. I think it will be an issue for them to face later.

An email went out last week, as of Sept. 1, the system will upgrade from central office...

It keeps YOUR computer records on file for 7 years...

Naaaaaaaaa I am thinking about passing on it...

Just sayin...

Re: Misuse of the computer

At my county facility, they took our internet and email from us...seems officers were playing games and doing fantasy leagues on work time....alot of officers upset but in my opinion they hurt themselves.....We still have computers in the block for the inamte tracking system and to write our reports on. It doesn't bother me much that we don't have the email or internet anymore because for the 8 years I worked state DOC before moving to county, we didn't have computers/internet/email in the dorms....we still wrote reports with our trusty black ink pen on DOC forms.....
