VRA is veterans' preference. It's discussed on USA Jobs.

Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA) (Formerly, Veterans' Readjustment Appointment)
  • What it provides: VRA allows appointment of eligible veterans up to the GS-11 or equivalent. Veterans are hired under excepted appointments to positions that are otherwise in the competitive service. After the individual satisfactorily completes 2 years of service, the veteran must be converted noncompetitively to a career or career-conditional appointment.
  • When to use it: VRA can be a good tool for filling entry-level to mid-level positions.
  • Who is eligible: VRA eligibility applies to the following categories:
    • Disabled veterans;
    • Veterans who served on active duty in the Armed Forces during a war declared by Congress, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized;
    • Veterans who, while serving on active duty in the Armed Forces, participated in a military operation for which the Armed Forces Service Medal was awarded; and
    • Veterans separated from active duty within 3 years.

Hey Bro, everyone makes a mistake. Dont sweat it, just call HR and tell them you think you made a mistake on your app. The thing is you can still apply, you just cant check off on the VRA. That doesnt mean they wont still consider hiring you either. If you have experience you could still get a job there. The VRA thing means that all vets that apply under that will be considered first. However, lets say 9 vets apply and you apply and they are hiring 10 for the spot. Guess what, you have a good chance at being hired.

Re: Correctional Officer (VRA)???

You wont get in trouble for that. When your application is graded with a score from 100 to 0, they don't add the vets points on until afterwards.

So say your application is outstanding, they give you a 100...with your VA added...5 points for vets, 10 points for disabled vets, you receive a total score of 105 or 110..which would place you right at the top of the certificate (list of eligibles). If your application didn't rate the 100, and say you got a 75, it would still be benificial to get the additional 5 or 10 points to jump you up higher on the certificate. To be eligible for the additional points you have to prove to them your a vet, usually with a copy of your seperation paperwork.

The Veterans Preference also makes it a little harder for them to skip you over. They have to provide a valid reason to OPM (Office of Personnel Management) for your non-selection, which is a little tough.
