Transfer Of Staff

Hey all.

I'm coming up on the end of my 1 year "Probationary Period". I have a chance to transfer to another Institution, I'm at a Complex now. The transfer would involve moving a few states away from where I currently am.

One of my managers is telling me that the Bureau would see my transfer "in a bad light" because I only put in one year at my current location. She is telling me that I should do three or more years where I am before I consider moving. The location I am relocating to, I plan to stay at, unless it's a total HELLHOLE.

The transfer would be a "Lateral" as I'm currently a GS10 in Medical. What do you all think? Should I stick it out where I am or should I move? What are the pluses and minuses to moving? I'm just looking for other's expiriences and opinions, I will make and live by my own choices.

Thank you for your help.

I cant say as I have ever heard of the BOP looking down on one for making a transfer. Most that I have talked to that have been with the Bureau for awhile have said that being mobil is what it takes to go far in the BOP.

Re: Transfer Of Staff

I wouldn't worry about the managers input, it's what you want to do and doing it after your year is up... Health Services has needs around the Bureau and if it benefits the Bureau they will take it with open arms, even if it benefits you!

As far as where to go, if your eyeing a place talk to them there and see what they say!

As a lateral move, you may have to move yourself, unless they have a position where they would pay for your move even as a lateral. I have experienced both a self and payed moved and the both have ups and downs. I now prefer the payed move! Some would say other wise! It depends on how well you manage things!

pluses to payed moves are if you own your house, they buy it at fair market value. and this is only good if you invested a few years into it so you get something in return for your next place!

packing - paid moves they pack you so if something breaks you can claim it, but you may not want it broken. Self packing, you may not pack it well enough and you have no one to blame but yourself and you can not claim it. But you can go out and buy a new thing when you get ur next pay check!

not much help cause it been 2yrs since last move!

Re: Transfer Of Staff

Thanks guys.

I'm going to be talking to the place I want to move to soon. I do have a "connection" in that my Supervisor said that he would "voucher" me with the place I want to relocate to.

The other Manager is no longer a Manager, go figure. I may be able to get this as a "Paid Move" and since I've only had my house for three years, and the housing market being what it is, I may be money ahead to do this.

Any more comments and suggestions are eagerly welcome.

By the sounds of it your in like Flint and yes it's good that it can possibly be a paid move, so you should be money ahead as you said!

Make sure when movers come to pack that you have at least two people to watch how things are done and to check things off. Keep track of the general contents of stuff that goes in each box as it's packed. It's best to talk before hand with your group of "Watch the Packers" so your all on the same page on how you will list what goes in each box. Cause the movers will tag each box and item with numbers which then goes on a list, and the boxes will have general content on their sheets. you may want specifics. Make sure each of you have a notebook or pad for all your information.

Some of the others on here will surely have more notes for you so come back here often and take notes!

I wouldn't worry about what a manager thinks, unless you want to be a manager. Hell, you're already a GS-10. It took me a transfer and almost 11 years of wondering if I would ever make GS 8 before I did. And you get shift differential and Sunday Pay too!

You got it made. And honestly, you've about gone as far as you ever will unless you are willing to gobble that goober. So, live for you and yours, or open wide.

This is true! When I went to Gylnco in June '07 we had a GS-14 DOCTOR in our class from Kentucky. On weekend pay dates down there he was off with his rich buddies sailing on a yacht while we were having pool parties at a Comfort Inn and splitting the costs on buying Miller Lite!

I knew I should have strived harder to become a doctor!

Re: Transfer Of Staff

Yeah, the only position I want is a GS11, and it's not management.
