Re: Correctional Officer Statistics

I posted these in another thread some time ago. If you read this before I apologize. I added some more below:

2004

64 I/M on I/m assaults 15 I/M on Staff assaults

4-100 series 0-100series
60-200 series 15-200 series(13 in SHU)

Past 12 months

131 I/M on I/M assaults 31 I/M on Staff assaults

22-100 series assaults 5-100 series assaults
109-200 series assaults 26-200-series(11 in SHU)

The number of total assaults has increased more than 2X in the last 12 months.
The number of 100-series assaults at LEW is 5X higher in the last 12 months than in 2004

HOW SAFE IS LEW TO LIVE AND WORK?

These numbers are not broken down into staff or inmate, but are just reportable incidents at LEW

Over the first 9 months of 2008 there were 203 incidents which equals .743 incidents per day.

Over the same period of 2007 there were 110 incidents which equals .402 incidents per day.

Using these numbers you can plainly see that you are nearly twice as likely to be running to something today than you were a year ago.

I originally started to using these numbers to determine whether Augmentation(Noncostody staff working custody posts) would show any increase in violence in LEW. The numbers easily prove that as well. With a 30% higher amount of incidents during the period of Augmentation as compared to the the rest of the year without Augmnetation

Re: Correctional Officer Statistics

Having lived these stats (the suicide one) I don't think it is a problem of not loving your job, or being fully committed (no pun intended), or pride--not the bad kind, the GOOD kind. I just believe that the job chips away at your soul. No matter how strong you are. Like my brother said--the only difference was he got to go home at night--and he did not mean that in a bad way, it was more of a "matter of fact" way. And my brother loved his job. If we all spend most of our lives at our jobs, whatever job that may be, it stays with you. I don't know how you do it. John Q Public does not have a clue what it is like working day in day out over seeing the scum of the earth--all they know is what the read in the papers. Like for instance, California, I wish I lived there so I could sign the recall papers.

And away I wonder. And, by the way, if you don't drink, don't start. Remember there are people out here who love you and want you to come home everyday and will miss you when you are gone.

Re: Correctional Officer Statistics

The stats are scary, but true, and whether you are an adrenaline junky who loves running to the alarms, or a stress monger who dreads the call, either way the stress to the mind and body build over time. Without an outlet, we are all bound for hard living and early dying. I recommend a six month on, six month off rotation, with a full years pay. I am willing to be the guinea pig for this experiment.
