Re: Inmate Recovering After Shooting

My condolences to the Officer.

He gets to face an investigation, possible loss of employment and a lawsuit. Not a fun way to end a shift.

The inmate shouldn't have been doing what he was doing, that's the cause of him getting a bullet in his body. As far as the rifles and zeros, I had a BOP Firearms Instructor tell me they would have to "raise the Front Sight" on a rifle that was already shooting low. You shooters will understand this, and why it is the wrong thing to do in this situation.

If I'm ever forced to use a Rifle in the course of my duties for the BOP I'll probably have to "spray and pray" to hit anything as the Rifle will not be sighted in for me, refer to my comment above about raising the front sight. From what I've seen of the BOP I'm not too impressed with the agency.

Re: Inmate Recovering After Shooting

I understand this thread started in May 2008, does anyone know if the officer got jammed up on this "righteous shoot"?

To disspell some myths, the BOP does not require you to fire a warning shot, they would prefer you to, but there are situations when a warning shot is not feasible, such as when one inmate is killing another inmate on the rec yard, like in this case.

500 shots at Florence, well that is a lot of rounds, but when your adrenaline is pumping, your breathing quickens, your eyes glaze over and you can feel your pulse through your entire body, thus causing a lot of shots to be fired.

The sights on the 16 are for windage and distance, not for your shooting style, per se. These weapons come from the manufacturer zeroed in for indoor shooting. Do not mess with the sights, even though it may be fun to do???

Finally, policy states to use the minimum amount of force to regain control of the inmate, the inmate did not die here, so obviously it was minimum force.

This has been my 2 cents.

Easy way to check the sites for tampering is to just use a paint pen and write on the stock how many clicks from battle site zero it takes to zero in the weapon.

If it takes 3 clicks to the left.. write in the #3 with an arrow pointing the right direction..

If someone plays with it you can just go back to your battle site zero and re-zeroize your weapon by turning your windage and elevation the required amount of clicks.

I'm with you guys.If the BOP does not require a warning shot and will back up the officer he should be ok in all areas. The inmate is lucky to be in the hospital recovering.I would ask the captain if I could go sit on him at the hospital for some easy overtime.

If you were the officer could you keep a straight face while telling investigations what happened.

Not always. The officer at USP BMT that shot the inmate back towards the beginning of the year, was working the compound his next 3 working days after the incident.
