OK OK, aim for his left shoulder you will be hitting about center then... This is at 50 yards...

WTF OVER???

These are the same rifles that we will be using during an incident. Would you REALLY want someone shooting at an inmate across the rec yard 150 - 200 yards with officers in the area??

I wouldn't, I am an excellent shot.

But this is insane!!

When you work the primiter trucks you will find where other staff will sit and play with the sites cranking them up and down and back and forth...

Why can they not grasp someone's life may actually depend on the person using this weapon being able to hit what they are aiming at??

REALLY REALLY insane!

Two problems I have with what you said about ART.
#1, your security officer or firearms instructor or designated person(s) should ensure these weapons are sighted in properly. If nothing else, this should be done during the quarterly test fire (if that is being done).

#2, the firearms instructor should not be telling anyone to aim anywhere other than center mass. Now, if the sights are off, the instructor should correct the weapon at that time instead of telling you to aim somewhere other than center mass (that is if the instructor knows how to shoot the weapon and adjust the sights properly).

As a suggestion, a log should be kept on all the weapons with the sight adjustments documented. That way, if you are working the perimeter vehicle or tower and feel the sights were off, all you would have to do is check the log for sight documentation and make the necessary adjustments. Who ever works the tower or perimeter, should be held accountable for playing with the weapons during their shift. I am not sure how you would check it though.

How come the tower officers rifles are not scoped? Just iron sights? Jeez.

The Bureau doesn't want people to play Sniper. It would be better to rattle off 30 rounds and hit nothing than bury a 5.56 in a thugs ear.

I think they should put lasers on all the weapons systems...similar to a tazer. There is nothing more humbling than watching a red dot dance across your chest/face. To me, THAT would be the warning.

"INMATE! Stop and lie down or there will be a golf-ball sized hole on the opposite side of this dot!"

But that doesn't match with the political "correctness" of our business...

The problem with the way our BOP rifles are set up is, in fact, that they aren't zeroed in according to who is shooting them. It's already been mentioned above, but if somebody had to shoot 100 yards, something tells me the inmate is safe. The would ALL be warning shots...except the one that clips an officer's leg off at the knee...

Actually warning shots are not required. I was involved in a shooting where the inmate who was climbing the interior fence was shot through the leg and fell back into the yard. Almost caused a riot, as the other inmates started yelling he was going after a handball that had landed in the "out of bounds" area. Luckly when he fell off the fence, one of his gloves remained entangled in the razor wire. That definately put an end to the rumor we always gave the first fence!

If the officer felt the inmate was going to be killed by the assault, deadly force is authorized.

That is most likely the reason 500 rounds were fired at Florence...

The officers had a bead on them, just couldn't hit anything.

I think each tower officer AND PP Units should have a weapon assigned to the officer that HE has sighted in and KNOWS it will hit if he needs to use it.

Another thing about the BOP...You shoot an inmate and your basically signing your transfer papers..least it used to be so.

The transfer was basically for your own protection.
