US Marshal / Polk Co Sheriff / Iowa DOC Warrant team

DOC High Risk Parole Officer shoots parolee .

Single Shot Kills Man During Arrest - Des Moines News Story - KCCI Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A Des Moines man is dead following a shooting during an attempt to arrest him.

Four members of the Iowa Department of Corrections Violent Fugitive Task Force Warrant Team came to arrest Bradley Edward Behmer, 50, at the Deer Ridge Apartments at 6009 Creston Avenue at 7:30 p.m.

The warrant team got a tip on Friday that Behmer was at the complex and he was wanted for violating his parole. He recently was released from prison on a 25 year sentence and was facing another 25 years in prison, police said.

The team arrived to arrest Behmer at the apartment. Investigators said the situation quickly got tense when Behmer fought with the warrant team.

"He resisted arrest and a violent struggle ensued," Valdez said.

During the fight, Behmer was shot once in the chest. Police said he was not armed.

"We got a call from them saying that there had been shots fired and the person that they were searching for was down," said Sgt. Vince Valdez, Des Moines police.

Behmer was transported to Methodist Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

State Corrections Department Spokesman Fred Scaletta said Behmer had missed multiple probation meetings since his fourth drug conviction in 2003.

"A police officer is not going to fire his weapon unless they do feel their life is in danger," Valdez said.

An investigation into the shooting is underway and is expected to be turned over to a Polk County grand jury.

I hope all of the officers involved are ok. On the bright side, another successful rehabilitation.

At least all of the officers went home in one piece.

Let that be a lesson to all the deadbeat probationers & parolees getting over out there!
