Then there's the fact that nearly every Human activity is a felony in some jurisdiction. If 100% of us in this forum don't commit at least one felony every day, I'll be very surprised.

I don't see that much of a problem with felons serving their country. It may be a redeeming factor. On the other hand, some gang members have gone into the military in order to get trained and return home to use their skills in more gang violence,, especially when trying to avoid police.

The issue is two folded. It may seriously back fire someday. Or it may just change the life of a felon for the better.

Peace out!!

I had a fellow soldier in my unit in FT. Hood, Texas who was given the choice of serve in military or serve time in jail. He opted for the Army. He was working in Personnel Records at Second Armored Division HQ, handling the records of soldiers in the Second Armored Division. And, he was OK with his job, good troop. So, yeah, for first time offenders I would say, "Give them this one chance but thoroughly screen them before allowing them in, and only on a case by case basis."

The UCMJ is more draconian than laws that apply to the average citizen, so they are equipped to handle these people.

I served with people given the choice go to jail or the Army, and they turned out alright. I've also worked with people that messed up as teenagers and are still paying for it to this day. They can't get a decent paying job and when pulled over by the police for minor traffic violations, they get grilled even though they've been clean in the years since. I'm not saying that I agree with the plan the Army and Marines have, but some people do learn their lessons.

I would agree that the screening process should be very thorough, but nothing is foolproof.

Why not give them a serious attempt to become a tax paying member of society...as long as their back grounds can clear further scruitny
