I understand that it is unfortunate that thugs utilize our military like this, and I wish there was some way to prevent it. But its not just convicted felons doing it. In that documentary on Gangland one of the individuals that were on there had no criminal record untill after he was out of the service. When I was an MP at MCAS Miramar in San Diego I arrested several military members whom were gang affiliated. But they had no civilian or military criminal record prior to me arresting them.

A good example of this is Timothy McVeigh. He did not have any criminal record and look what he did with his military training. Of course that is not Gang Related, well maybe it is, he was a Radical, anti-government Freak.
Which does not make any sense to me, since he joined the milatary, on his own accord. I wonder what happened to him to make him hate so much.

I took a gang information class For Cleet this past year, and part of the training was Gang members that joined the Military, for the training and to take it back to the gangs. It was very interesting. But too much info in a short period of time. Class needed to be longer.

McVeigh was a known anti-government radical prior to entering the military. I seen that on a documentary as well. But somehow he slipped through the cracks too. No screening system is going to catch everything. I wish there was, then we could sure crack down on dirty staff to.

the way i look at it is that it's kinda like a double edged sword, If a person has messed up and goes in and is changed by the experience then yea, it's a good thing but, I also watched the "gangland" episode on gangs in the military and i think that it is true that most get in and continue there "thug" ways. I was in for 4 years and I wouldn't like to have some "thug" watching my back on my tank.

I hear what all of you are saying but allowing felons to join I don't like. Not much we can do if they they are not a felon before joining. I just don't like the idea of a felon wearing the same uniform as me or offered the respect that all service members are given knowing that he had already been a leach on society.

Its too bad that its going to take a few of these guys to go out and cause some havoc on the streets when they get back and then they will get coddled by the system once again. Blaming their criminal acts on the war instead of pining the responsiblity on the individual causing the havoc.

Time will only tell..........
I second that...Just what I was thinking!

we have all done stupid things growing up that if we got caught we could have wound up in jail. it is a double edged sword, you will have the ones who realize that they messed up and are really going to change, then you got the ones who go in for the training or to get away from the hood. even here in iraq during my last deployment i seen graffiti on some walls. it makes me sick thinking i have people in the army who are still bangin. if you want to be in the military, nat. guard, reserves, active then do it.. they need to remember its a full time job even when your not on drill weekend. wow i do ramble.

Why not second chance? There are laws being considered, even passed that give some sort of second chance. I am of course talking about young first time offenders. Also the UCMJ is much more draconian than civilian law. Probably can handle the problems that arise better. The BOP used to have a boot camp style program for these guys anyway. The problem with the old BOP program is these guy used to go right back to where they came from. Maybe The US Army and the USMC, with four years of discipline and removal of the idiots from wence they came can put many of them on a good path. Not only that, the Army and USMC could always use more bullet stoppers right now!
