Shots fired during hospital escape

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Police were searching Wednesday for a prisoner who overpowered a guard, took his weapon and escaped from a hospital in suburban Washington, a state police spokesman said.

Maryland police released this mug shot of escaped prisoner Kelvin Polk, 45.

About 8 a.m., a prisoner who had been taken for treatment to Laurel Regional Hospital in Maryland took the weapon of an officer from the Jessup Correctional Institution and fired it in an apparent attempt to free himself from his shackles, Maryland State Police spokesman Sgt. Arthur Betts told CNN.

Police identified the escaped prisoner as Kelvin Polk, 45, who was serving life plus 40 years at the Jessup Correctional Institution for kidnapping, carjacking and robbery.
There were no reports that anyone had been hurt, Betts said.
The hospital was placed on lockdown until authorities determined that Polk was not in the facility, Betts said.

"They believe he is off the hospital grounds," he said.

Laurel is a Maryland suburb of Washington.

The hospital is near residential areas, and three schools were on lockdown, according to a public information officer for the Prince George's County Schools System

Glad the officer wasn't killed. I hope they catch this assclown soon.

Probably carrying the weapon in some cheap garbage gear like the BOP makes us use.

The past 30 years or more, holster makers have made rigs that are practically snatch-proof. Leave it to prison agencies to use the cheapest garbage money can buy for transporting thugs doing 40 years.

Don't worry, as a Marylander I can tell you unequivocally that the State Government will find an equally wasteful way to use the money.

I bet there will be some changes a comin' at this department. It was undoubtedly because CO's have no business carrying weapons on the street or anywhere for that matter (sarcasm). I would bet though that there is discussion about "Firearms Policy on transports" in the near future for Maryland's DOC.
