Post Attempted escape

Attempted escape by inmate at Stringfellow unit ends in gunfire

BY: Duane Stuart, Backgate Website

An inmate trying to scale a perimeter fence at the region 3 Mac Stringfellow unit this afternoon got more than he bargained for after an alert officer working a perimter picket is credited with stopping the potential escape. The inmate, not yet identifed by major news organizations or TDCJ was attempting to climb over a perimeter fence when the officer spotted him and opened fire with a state issued AR-15 rifle. The number of rounds fired was not yet released at press time tonight. The offender, who was not wounded in the attempt fell from the fence during the incident injuring himself. Sources say he was then taken to a local emergency room for treatment.

Great job to the female correctional officer who was alert and on the job. She just may have prevented someone on the outside from being hurt or killed by the escaping inmate. The Stringfellow unit, located in Rosharon, Brazoria county houses 1,136 make inmates, including custody levels from trusty to G4. The unit encompasses over 16,000 acres of property that is shared with the Ramsey and Terrell units. The unit employs some 333 staff members.

The last incident of this nature occured on the Stringfellow unit back in September of 2007 when inmate Leon Lee walked away from a work detail just outside of the unit. Lee was serving a 25 year sentence from Galveston county for indecency with a child. He remained free for just 75 minutes before unit tracking dogs located him on the property.

She should have kept firing until she did hit him. How can she miss 30 rounds? How far away was she when she began firing? I recommed using the shotgun, up close and personal, if your a lousy aim with the AR-15.

Only 10 rounds? I've heard of some ignorant policies and that's up at the top. Didn't, back around 1997, Texas have 7 Death Row Inmates hit the fence at once and all get over and away? What the Hell is one officer with 10 rounds supposed to do when that happens?
