Bopstew How Long have you being in this line of work. If you are 19 year old you haven't being in the game that long what kind of advice can you give to someone you are still a noobie your self. The things you are telling new poeple to do is not the right thing to be teaching them. You are new your self and your opinions are wrong.

Sir, with all due respect, your thread posting should have rather been sent via a private message with the conflicted party. Seeing that you are obviously hot under the collar about the so-called "misleading advice/age discrepancy", then what better advice would you suggest? As well as, what makes you an authority on such correction matters?

And to you good sir, I pose the same question shouldn't your negative statements to THE ONE been have sent via pm?? I mean each individual should realize and accept that whenever one post such thoughts or comments that they will be interpreted by others and that others may respond. Perhaps you yourself should have been aware of this before you decided to try to bust another out. The question raised was a good question being 19 and not being in corrections for more than a year what experience does he have. I know personally I see something new all the time and not every scenerio is the same or should be handled the same. If any kind of training is to be had it should be that. NOT EVERY SITUATION CALLS FOR THE SAME RESPONSE OVER AND OVER.

I'm gonna play devils advocate here. BOP's advice is great advice.

What makes it so? Quite simple. It is advice for new officers given by a new officer from a new officer's point of view. A lot of times, senior officers forget what it is like to be a "newbie". It helps to have a fresh perspective sometimes.

Also, to those trying to make an issue out of it, please take the time to actually read what he listed. It makes sense and is most likely listed based on personal observations.

So to BOPStew, thank you for the post. It's good advice and is most appreciated.

Stew expressed ideas. That's what we do in this forum--express ideas. That's what it's for.

BOPSTEW,

Why did you delete your posts? It was good IMO. Both those guys were "trolls", they don't know what they are talking about and just wanted a fight. If you get shook by that kind of stuff, man you need to harden up.

Re: Tips For The New Guys

The best tip I can give any newbie is to go in there and be yourself. If you are the super macho type, fine..if you are the easy going laid back type, again fine. The worse thing you can do is go in there and try to be something your not...the inmates will see right through your game and never trust you.

Eventually they will know who to stay away from (macho types) or who to talk (or snitch) to.

I always treated every inmate equally, they all got what they had comming and nothing more...I used to say to them "Don't mistake my kindness for weakness." and they never did.

I know it sounds strange, but once you establish yourself with the population and they get to "know your style" life will be much easier for you on the inside.

Another good reason for this is if your a pain in the ass at home...take it to work with you, if not, don't try to be one at work, cause you will evenutally take it home...and your family deserves to have the "real" you back at the end of the day.

Re: Tips For The New Guys

I joined the UK prison Service in 1979 so i do have some sound advice that may help. Be yourself & not someone you want to be. Always be honest with staff & prisoners, Never, I mean Never prommise a prisoner you will do something for them and then dont follow it up. It takes a while to gain respect but this is achievable as long as you are consistent at work. Be fair with your prisoners and yes you will be let down by them, but don't let that set you back.

Top Tip.........Find yourself a senior member of staff who YOU think does his job proffessionally. Watch how he or she carries out their duties & try a few styles for yourself but remember what works for them might not work for you, but this is the point, you learn & develop your charachter as you try different styles. After a while and without realising it you become relaxed & confident with yourself. Be happy at work and dont be a nasty person, jails are full of nasty officers & usually these people are not genuine.
Take care in your new job
Tony

Start out harsher and more of a stickler for rules. Then you can back off to a level appropriate to the situation. It is better to start off hard and dial it down than to find out you are too easy and to try to bring it up.
