Suspect in deadly invasion was Eloy prison guard

TUCSON - A home invasion suspect who was fatally shot was a prison guard in Arizona, a spokeswoman for a nationwide private prison corporation said Wednesday.

Corrections Corporation of America official Louise Grant said Danny Torres, 27, had worked at Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy since April 2008. The company, which has 17,000 employees, runs the private, medium-security facility.

The Pima County Sheriff's office described the Friday night invasion:

Someone called police as three men broke into a neighbor's home Friday night and pistol-whipped the homeowner.

The intruders fired shots at another neighbor who intervened as the three men were leaving the home. The neighbor's son returned fire and Torres was shot. He later died at University Medical Center.

Torres' alleged accomplices, Manuel Nathan Moreno, 19, and Alejandro Salazar Romero Jr., 18, were arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. Arizona law allows those involved in the commission of a felony that results in the death of another person, including other suspects, to be held responsible for the death.

Grant said that to her knowledge in 10 years with Corrections Corporation of America, the corporation has not had a similar situation involving any of its guards.
