For instance, you go through Sally Mae to cover your student expenses. You won't have to pay anything to Sally Mae until 6 months after you graduate with your degree. Then, during the 6 months after you graduate you apply for the Federal Perkins Loan discharge to cover ALL of your debt with Sally Mae (or other lender) and you're in the clear. I believe that's how it works. In the third link I provided it states that one of the professions covered at or up to 100% is full-time law enforcement or corrections officer. I hope this helps a little!

I am pretty sure that I read that Perkins is need based. Since I have a husband with a job that pays well, it means I am not eligible. Oh well. If I had done it a few years ago before hubby I would have been VERY eligible. Oh, and noone told me about that when I was in college so I took out the wrong kind of loans then!! I tell EVERYONE thinking about college to look at Perkins first!

You very well might not be eligible, but apply anyways. If you do not you have a 0% chance of getting it, if you do apply you have 50% chance of getting it. Most of those grants are based on the amount of applications, so even though you think you are not eligible, they may have enough grants to give you one. Always apply, or the answer is NO.

Re: time to get philosophical, I suppose

Well, I am now on the phone trying to get a deferment of my previous loans and am waiting for a "supervisor" because I could not understand the rep that answered the phone.

Oh great, got the supervisor and can't understand him very well either.

I am pretty sure the call center is in India.

EEEEEK

Why OH Why do I try?

The good news is I finally managed to get enrolled in a class. My appeal to waive was denied (surprise, surprise) and I start in October.

Well, homework all around my house!!!!
