Re: Greensburg PA

Well I guess Ill post on my own thread for now.

I am currently serving the last 9 months of my 9 year Military Career. Decided I wanted to spend some more time home with the family. I will be moving to Connellsville area in Jan-Feb 09 and hope to have already taken my Civil Service Test before that around Aug-Sep 08.
Got a few connections and apparently calling from Iraq to talk to human resources is a good career move as well...lol.
I look forward to working in a line of work where I still feel I make a diffrence, yes I have that in the military but missing Births, birthdays, weddings, funerals, anivirsaries, x-mas and all the other little things makes me want to be a civilian again. I am hoping that my family time will greatly in crease when I get out.
Hoping to get on the 6am-2pm shift so that I will be around when my son gets home from school and so that I can have things ready for when my wife gets home from work. She has been raising 3 kids by herself for the last year plus and I need to step in and take some of that off of her before shes grey...lol

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I'm not former military but I am trying to get in with the PA DOC. I'm scheduled to take the exam at the beginning June. I know there a few current and former PA guys on here that will chime in sooner or later.

Good luck with your transition. Have you been on PA DOC website yet?

I'll definitely keep you updated throughout the process and let you know how everything works and what to expect. I know there are immediate openings at Graterford and Chester. Both are relatively close to where I live, so thats good. I know pay starts at 29,815 for most places. Graterford and Chester start at 31,359. I also know that there is a lot of O.T. available at those institutions.

In reference to this one point of your post, please do not take offense but you will be highly let down on this area. Inmates will only make a change based on their own desires and motivation. Working in a correctional environment will allow you to set an example of a honest, law abiding citizen but it will not give you a sense of "making a difference" in a inmate's life. Your primary goal is to assure the inmate fulfills his sentence handed down to him by the court system.

Re: Greensburg PA

I guess that was my point keeping them off the street, and who knows maybe Ill reach one of them, maybe not, its not my goal to make them better people only to keep them out of the populace until its time for them to return.

I know I can do the things I do here there, and I know they arent going to change unless they want to (human nature learned at a HARD price) I jsut want to know that what I do somehow has and impact on others, makes life easy or safe for others.

Plus the money isnt all that bad, I start out making what I am making currently at 8 years in the military. I jsut really think I will do well at this job once the first few days are threw, and it get me home more often.

Never worked at Greensburg. But, had a few roomates who eventually transferred there. In regards to making a difference as a PA DOC Ofc. The only thing I took from that concept of corrections. Was making things right. Carrying out that final act of Justice. Ensuring that convict who hurt that victim, pays his debt to society and more so, to the victim himself/herself. Thats something you can take pride in. Knowing you play a critical part, in that big ole wheel of Justice.. Actually, one meaning of the word correct, by definition, is "To punish for the purpose of improving or reforming." As a correctins ofc, I leaned more towards the punishment aspect of things. And left the improving and reforming to the counselors.

I guess that is my purpose, that sums it up. Just like me being in the army I know I wont change the war but I am doing some part I am in something bigger than most will ever touch. I dont make great money, I dont get t.v. ads, I dont have a fancy car but I do have pride. Pride for my country, Pride for my job, Pride for making a change even if its a small one. If I influance one person or situation to a good out come I have done something.
I like the punishment aspect of this but I wonder if its really all I think it is or if its more or less. I guess time will tell.
I would just like to know what the prison is like and what to look forward to or prepair myself for.
