Re: Greensburg PA
I took the sgts test just before I left PA DOC. I made the list and at some point, probably would have gotten promoted. I cant recall, how much time you had to have to test. I want to say 5 yrs. You didn't have to stand out nor do anything unique to make rank. As long as you had the time, you could test. Sorry, cant recall how much of a pay raise it would have been. At the institution I was assigned, you could not bring weapons to work. I assume thats the same policy statewide. However, things may have changed.

Re: Greensburg PA
Wow thats a long wait to get a raise but I guess I will just have to tough it out. I kindda had a feeling that it would be something like that for the weapons as well. I was just wondering if they had a place to store them in the building like some places. Maybe its something to look into for the future putting one near by for people not that I have the funds to do anything like that. Thanks for the intell

Re: Greensburg PA
As an officer, you do get yearly step raises which aren't too bad. One good thing about working certain institutions in PA were winning bid positions. In only 10 years, I won 2 bid positions. Worked in the kitchen for a few years, which was a great gig. Also, won a bid position working in the hallways/doors. Had I stuck it out, could have earned a tower. Talk about an easy 8 hrs. I mean, getting paid pretty dam good to sit on your keister and watch deer all day/night long. Its a unique job to say the least.

Re: Greensburg PA
I guess that would be a pretty sweet gig to scope out deer before the season, though I think I would be far to tempted to shoot one of them. I live in NC the hunting is not so good down where I am in fact the deer are rather small compaired to the north east.
So how does the bid work I mean is it just going before a bored or is there alot more to it than that |

Re: Greensburg PA
Once a bid position was announced, you just filled out a small form. The form itself just ask for your name, rank and the date you were hired. The officer with the most seniority wins the position. Like I mentioned earlier, some PA institutions have very few if any bid positions. Others have many. I think alot has to do with the size of the jail, the way the prison is run and other factors.
