Scuttlebutt

Hey since I seem to be the only one from Oregon, I figured I would start posting the Corrections Scuttlebutt going on here in Oregon. Not actually hired yet the info will be limited, but that will hopefully change soon.

What I know:

*May 15th there was a hiring freeze.
*It appears that they are on a hire as needed program right now from names already in the hiring pool prior to May 15th.
*Rumor has it hiring could open back up in November/December (I assume this has everything to do with local politics/measures/etc.).

Yep, Oregon was a different duck for sure. First, I had to fill out an app. and mail it in...lol. Guess it makes for legal. I received a notice of test results saying I qualified to join an eligibility list. I'm on my way now.

Re: Scuttlebutt

Okay, had the second interview and think everything went well. I should know if I get selected to move onto the last step (physical) in a week.
A correction to the first post; the Superintendent said they are hiring for 10 positions... Slightly different than what I was told in the first interview. It appears I have a 50/50 chance by the number of people that showed up for the tour and 2nd interview (10 positions and roughly 20 some applicants).

Re: Scuttlebutt

I am currently a C/O in Idaho and I heard Oregon pays really well for C/Os. Will they accept my POST certification?

I believe that they will. I started this process last September, and it looks as though I may be hired by the end of this month if all goes well.
First thing I would do is go to their web site, print off the App. and get it in Asap.
Most likely you will receive a letter within a couple months saying that you are qualified. Then you will receive a call to meet with the B/G investigator. Once your B/G is complete you would be placed in the hiring pool.
I was placed in the pool end of April, then they had a hiring freeze May 15th. The freeze is still in affect as far as I know, but they are hiring "as needed". Rumor is that the freeze could be lifted by end of the year.
Get the App. in, and good luck!

Other local agencies in my area with open App. are:

Clackamas County Sheriffs - Open and fill as necessary
Washington County Sheriffs - Hiring
Marion County - just keep your eye on their web site, openings are spotty, usually see something every couple months.

Post Background Interview

Got the call today to do a BI by phone...that's too cool. The investigator covers 3 institutions in the eastern part of state. Can anyone elaborate on the eastern part of state near Ontario? Does the state pay twice a month or every two weeks? What are the hours of the shifts?
Any info. is appreciated.

Here's what I know for what it's worth..

The three institutions I believe would be:

Snake River institution.
Powder River institution.
Eastern Oregon Correctional facility (?).

If you like hot summers, and cold winters this is the place for you; but keep in mind this is the North West and the two extremes will not be as bad as say the Mojave Desert and Minnesota. It is a "high desert".
Another plus (in my book anyway) is that you would be next to some of the best rivers for Flyfishing; if that's your thing.
Also close by are the Steens, great place for the Quad, buggy, etc. type (some of the best sand around).

The pay is twice a month (not sure of the pay "dates" but I will know them soon).

The shift hours may vary from prison to prison.
Typical is 6:00-14:00, 14:00-23:00, 23:00-6:00
I also have seen the shift cycle start at 7:00.

Re: Scuttlebutt

Oh, and if you ride a street bike.... you gotta take a ride through "Hells Canyon", then maybe a day trip from Hells Canyon to Halfway to Baker City, great roads! and it only gets better from there if you have the time off to spend on the bike.

Yep...SRCI(Snake River, Ontario), PRCF(Powder River, Baker City), TRCI(Two Rivers, Umatilla)...that's a lot of rivers. I don't know if we would like it or not. We do like the seasons though. Thanks for the good info. and hope you get on soon.

Re: Scuttlebutt

Right on guys. I wish you both the best of luck. I've seriously been considering transfering over there. The fact that just on the other side of the Idaho border, there is almost twice the money...wow. what's good is, I'm not tied down here so it wouldn't be that much for me to move over there. And I love Oregon, no sales tax
