Sand Springs man found dead in Lawton prison


LAWTON -- Police are investigating the death of a Sand Springs man who was found dead in his cell at a private prison in Lawton.

Darrell R. Myers, 44, died from blunt force trauma to the head late Wednesday in his cell at the Lawton Correctional Center, Police Capt. Will Hines said.

Hines said Lawton detectives were interviewing suspects and witnesses inside the jail and that two inmates were "persons of interest" in Myers' death.

He said a motive for Myers' killing had not been determined.

Police were called to the prison after a guard found Myers in his cell, which was not locked down at the time of his death, Hines said.

Myers was serving time for a first-degree rape conviction out of Tulsa County, prison records show.

The death marks the fourth time an inmate has been killed at the facility since June 2003, The Lawton Constitution reported.
