Inmate found dead in cell; foul play is suspected

McALESTER -- Foul play is suspected in the death of an inmate whose body was found in his cell Monday at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary.

The maximum-security unit cell of William P. Smith, 55, "is being treated as a crime scene," Warden's Assistant Terry Crenshaw said Tuesday.

"The death is being investigated by Department of Corrections' internal affairs, in conjunction with the state Medical Examiner's" Office, he said.

Smith had several felony convictions, including two counts of shooting with an intent to kill from Creek County and possession of a controlled substance from Oklahoma County, the DOC Web site shows.
