**** Conner inmate killed in altercation

Tulsa World

OKLAHOMA CITY -- An inmate at **** Conner Correctional Center died Friday shortly after an altercation with other inmates in a housing unit at the Hominy facility, according to a news release issued Monday by the prison.

Inmate John Pierce, who was serving a life sentence for murder in a McIntosh County case, was observed in the altercation with about four other inmates at about 8:45 p.m., according to the release.

When an officer responded to the scene, the prisoners dispersed.

However, Pierce had received multiple knife wounds to his chest and upper torso, according to the release. Medical staff were called, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing and charges have not yet been filed, said Jim Rabon, a Department of Corrections spokesman.

DOC records show that there were five offender homicides between July 1, 2006, and May 1, 2007, in the entire state prison system.

**** Conner Inmate Stabbed To Death

HOMINY, Okla. (AP) -- An inmate at a northeast Oklahoma prison was stabbed to death after a fight broke out among several inmates, prison officials said.

John Pierce, 42, was stabbed several times in the chest and torso during the altercation Friday and died at the scene, said Mike Bolt, a spokesman for the R.B. "****" Conner Correctional Center in Hominy.

The murder weapon was likely a sharp object fashioned by an inmate, said Jim Rabon, a spokesman for the Oklahoma Corrections Department.

The medium-security prison, which houses about 1,200 inmates, was briefly locked down after the stabbing, Bolt said.

Five inmates, including Pierce, were involved in the melee, Bolt said.

The four inmates have been segregated from the general population while the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation looks into the incident.

Pierce was serving a life prison sentence for a first-degree murder conviction out of McIntosh County in 1993, prison records show.

Five homicides in eleven months! Not bad. Three years ago we were having that many in USP Leavenworth alone, and five times as many attempted homicides. The only thing that kept them from being successful was the lack of good, sharp cutting edges on their prison knives.
