Correctional officer killed at federal prison in Atwater

A federal correctional officer at U.S. Penitentiary Atwater is dead after being stabbed to death by an inmate at the facility on Friday, the Sun-Star has learned.

Although details are still sketchy, Merced County Sheriff/Coroner Mark Pazin said the officer was transported to a hospital in Merced after the stabbing. The FBI is conducting the investigation into the incident and Pazin said he will work with the warden and federal officials during the next few days.

The officer was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced at 3:30 p.m. and was pronounced dead at 4:15 p.m., Pazin said.

"Our hearts go out to our fellow officers at the federal prison," Pazin said. "Any time you lose an officer, it's always traumatic."

The identity of the deceased officer has not been released. "I cannot release any information at this time," said Jesse Gonzalez, a spokesman for the prison.

It is time we band together. The BOP needs to step up to the plate and start going after these assaults!

If not, we will and are losing ground against these guys. They are trimming us back as the inmate population grows. This needs to stop.

They are hiding their heads in the sand. We have lost one of our own, it needs to stop here.

I logged on and saw this, I called the institution to let them know. The Capt. (Bernard Holleran) was still in the institution. (It was around 9:00 PM) He called back wanting to know what happened. Officers here are saddened by this.
