Re: Correctional officer killed at USP-Atwater

I started on December 26, 1982, the day after Gregory Gunter was killed at FCI Petersburg. In February 1983 Gary Rowe, who had just transferred from Lompoc to San Diego was murdered. By now, I was wondering what I had gotten myself into. Then in October the two murders of Merle Clutts and Robert Hoffman took place just as I was thinking the Bureau was "leveling off". Then Boyd Spikerman was found murdered at FCI Oxford with a fire extinguisher.

We had our own problems in house also, a staff member committed suicide and another died of a heart attack responding to an emergency. One friend of mine transferred to FCI Sheridan and committed suicide at the road sign leading into the institution.

This may seem calous, but an inmates death didn't bother me. But one of "us" is a different story. I to would like to know why the administration continues about their daily routine and does nothing to help prevent these staff deaths.

Bob, you already know, better than most here. Because it has nothing to do with the bottom line. The prisons are run like a business now days. If a staff member gets killed that means dollar signs to the administration at that institution. And remember SES Wardens get a bonus every year based on the amount of money saved.

Taking the whole bureau of prisons into account, the number of staff vs the number of inmates a staff member murder once in awhile is acceptable, sad but true........

If Atwater comes off of lockdown too soon it will be bad.

We dont know exactly what happened yet, but if it was an "Isolated incident" then for the sanity of the staff they should stay locked down for at least a week if not more.

Have them rip the prison apart. Lock up any inmates that look at you crooked.
Transfer anybody even remotely involved to the other side of the planet.

If at least this doesnt happen then the BOP has truely gone to hell.

The BOP has had more staff killed in the line of duty in the past 15 years than it had in the previous 25...... I retired in 00' after the riots of the 90's and killing of Williams at Lompoc & Washington in Atlanta.......

Myself along with all BOP staff here at FMC Lexington are tremendously saddened by our fallen brother. Our prayers and thoughts are extended to not only the family and staff at USP Atwater but to all law enforcement officers out there that put their life on the line everyday. Stay safe and God Bless!

WOW...were the inmates following the same policy reguarding weapons...???

My thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Rivera, RIP my Brother

Exactly right. More emphasis is needed on management of these thugs.

Shouldnt they be transferred out by now?
It's not the Sablan in Florence. It was two inmates from Guam. What makes me mad is that one of them was being held in the fed system for killing a Guam CO.

I don't know if anyone one on here knows Officer Rivera's family. I was told today he has a few cousins with the BOP. Word needs to spread to his family that they need to hire an OUTSIDE attorney and gather their own facts! The Bureau's account will be in the Bureau's favor.
