Wolf re-intro program !!WTF !!
![]() ![]() Awright,so the fed gov. figures that since wolves used run across the Rockies and Great Plains than by god we need to bring 'em back.Which is all fine and good except; A. The species of wolf being re-introduced is NOT the same species indigenous to that region. They are re-introducing a timber wolf hybrid that is much larger than the plains wolf. Translates to a pair of wolves can now accomplish what it used to take a small pack to do.Do more with less concept. B. Back when wolves were commonplace, huge herds of buffalo roamed. The weak, lame and lazy were able to pretty much sustain the wolves.Nowadays, the great herds no longer exist which translates to animals who haven't had to deal with large pack animals will certainly have to adapt and quickly; especially during the calving season, which isn't going to happen for several generations. Again this translates to diminshed numbers of elk and Shiras moose, not to mention the potential havoc on livestock. Montana is toying with the idea of opening up hunts on a limited basis, believe on a drawing/lottery.Which is good except HSUS/PETA are already looking at keeping this tied up in the courts for years to come,so no impact there.Don't figure the feds have any plans to reintroduce buffalo by the millions so we can forget that. And I'm thinking if you have an elk or moose hunt planned for anytime in the future you may wanna act fast before the DNR realizes the large deer no longer have sustainable numbers. All in all,I'm getting really tired of the bunny huggers and the gov. taking this kind of approach. They are basing policy on emotion as opposed to science. And the results will be ugly.Get your elk hunts in now.

Re: Wolf re-intro program !!WTF !!
In Montana at least they brought the wolves back to control the elk and deer populations but that hasn't worked at all. Wolves are very smart and they figured out that it's way easier to go kill cows that won't run than a twitchy deer. I like wolves and wish their population would have just been there the whole time, but the reintroduction was not a good idea.

Re: Wolf re-intro program !!WTF !!
Ok wolves have been reintroduced through out this whole country. Now it is up to the States to figure out how to control them. In Michigan they are already over populating areas that are populated by people. Thus this is causing a public safety concern. So guess what now the state has been working with the DNR ( Department of Natural Resources) to figure out a plan to control the population. They basically came up with a lotto drawing hunt every year.
Now another problem Coyotes are making there own way back into society and they too are becoming a nuisance and public safety problem. So guess what now there is only 2 times a year that coyotes are not allowed to be hunted in Michigan. Those two times a year is only because that is when moms are dealing with the pups.

Part of the argument being thrown around on why wolf re-intro is a good idea is to control the coyote population.Whatever. Fact is,up north in Alaska and the Yukon wolves have huge migrating herds of caribou. At one time, bison served the same purpose. Without a large migratory herd, they are going to turn to and decimate the animals mentioned and livestock.I love ,though, how the feds orchestrated the re-into program and then left it to the states to deal(ie. clean up) with the mess. |
