i have a friend that has been a deputy for 14 years. about 13 years of that was spent working in the jail. he loved it. this sheriffs department is smaller than Wake but still decent size and very busy.

when i told him i was thinking about going into corrections/detention, he recommended going state. for the reason one is the insurance and bene's and another is that the sheriffs office is very political (obviously) which i have always known. personally, i don't like that. this is only my and a deputy that has experienced it for 14 years.

with that said, i would think that a county like Wake would probably have a higher starting pay than DOC.

if you don't mind working for a sheriffs department, then apply for both and see which one comes through.

good luck, keep us posted.

Do you have any former experience in Corrections or are you a first timer?

Wake pays exactly the same as DOC/DOP starting with some exceptions.

Read their website.

Murphy has it right.. There's a TON of information on this board.
Also, when you take your test, (they'll call you after reviewing your application) and at the testing site, they'll ask you where you want to go while you can pick from a map, a few different places, including county and state..

Welcome to the site!

Get plenty of rest the night before... dress in a tank top and shorts... and you won't get the job. Dress the part.. look the part. Wear something like khakis and a nice collered shirt or something and good shoes. Remember... treat all the inmates the same way.. dont matter if he is a diaper swiper or someone who killed your best bud in a drunk driving accident.

Good luck and keep us posted.
