well i sat down with a calendar and filled out what a work schedule would be (according to the example Officer Pede gave). it seems like a great work schedule. i know 12 hr days get long, but with almost 15 years in Telecom, i have worked tons of OT and 15+ hour days.

i have my own small company where i do home theater and telecom work on the side for extra cash. working this kind of schedule would allow me to do some side work to make up for the crappy starting pay.

what does the state/CI say about CO's having a part time job?

You have to be "approved" by your supervisor (A Lieutenant) [I'm not sure in writing, but I would get it and this has to be done annually] to have a part-time job of no more than 20 hours a week while under the employment for the Department of Correction, as they are your primary job. Even if you own your own business, as I understand it.

By the by, if you skip out of work to do your side job and get caught... Your are going to be out of a job, as I'm told.

Certified letters? I got phone calls.

And Ofc. Pedde, some of us have to work days, it works wonders on passing those 12 hour shifts. But you do get paid more for fighting sleep not for doing more work, go fig.

i would never skip out to do side work, this will be my main job. the side work would only be for supplementing the income of NC CO.

how much more is the pay for nights?

thanks

Re: I am looking for info on how the 12 hour shifts work. can you guys help?

I work nights and I get 10% for working on a M-Th night and 20% for F-Su. This roughly translated to making about $31,000 per year versus the original $26,208 Base pay. This is of course not counting our "lovely raise" of $1,100 per year bonus spread out over 12 months. As for breaks, my institution gets a 20 min break every shift you work, but only if you have the man power to be relieved from your post. Most times I just eat on post and let the inmates watch lol. This is very interesting when I have a bucket of KFC or a cheeseburger lol.

that $31k is just for working nights? i knew about the differential, but i had no idea that it added up to that much of a difference. with the $1,100 raise it will obviously go up a little more.

that makes me want to look at doing nights now. i was planning on requesting days, because i thought it would only be a little bit of a difference, but thats alot more than i thought.

i am going to PM you too.

thanks

Re: I am looking for info on how the 12 hour shifts work. can you guys help?

Keep in mind the 1100 isn't really a raise. It is just a bonus, and the way Raleigh explained it to me was that you may or may not have the same thing next year. Looking at an old pay statement, it says my current pay is 2,671.08 before deductions...multiplying this by 12 gave me 32,052.96. now this statement also has $4.90 of holiday premium pay, and $291.00 of sick pay which doesn't get the shift differential. But if you would like to see my pay stub I would be more than happy to black out my info and e-mail you a copy so you can make more sense out of it.

Also I can post a copy of the rotations for both shifts if that would help you out any.

Equinox, thanks for the help. i wouldn't knowing what a true take home pay would be, if its not TOO personal. that would help me decide if i should request nights or not. i will PM you my email.

during my visit and paperwork at Alexander yesterday, the personnel lady told me that alot of the CO's actually perfer the night shift because of the differential. so that leads me to believe that there is a chance i would days. i just expected , being new, i would almost automatically get nights.

thanks again.
