Starting salary in NC?
Hi everyone,
Can someone tell me what the starting salary is for a Correctional Officer in North Carolina? I heard once that the starting pay was $1500. I assume that's $1500 per month? |

Thats if you're single, I'm married and have three kids so it's significantly higher. Also, your pay also depends on what shift you work on, night shift makes more. Also Central prison makes a site differential which is %10 more than all other facilities.

Re: Starting salary in NC?
There should be two others that get a site differential along with Central Prison.
North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women (NCCIW) - the female "equivalent" of Central Prison. However, I'm told the facility head is against giving his officers the site differential & so hasn't authorized it for some time now. Polk Correctional Institution - specifically deals with young adult male offenders up to the age of 25. This translate into a lot of fighting for C/Os here.

Re: Starting salary in NC?
I work at Polk, we don't get a site differential that I know of. They haven't said anything to us about one. And you are right, lots of fights, and several I/M on staff assaults both liquid and physical.
I just though of this, you could be right. The state may tell new hires that CP is the only place that gets the differential in order to try and attract more staff there. Last edited by OfficerPedde; 07-11-2008 at 05:40 PM. Reason: Second Thought |

i am interested in becoming a CO. my concern also is "making it" on 26,209. i have 2 kids so i am interested in what the take home would be after health insurance. i believe one of the states options would be $150 a month for employee and kids. but alot more if the the spouse is added on too. so according to PaycheckCity.com | Web-Based Paycheck Calculators take home (w/ 4 allowances) would be around $1800 a month. to be really nosey, it would nice to know if this take home is accurate for someone with kids. |

I moved back to MA and took a position in a county facility working for the Sheriff's Dept. and get this....I started as an officer making more than 5K more than when I left NC as a SGT. My advise to anyone getting into corrections....you gotta love the job because the pay just isn't that great.....the bennies can be worth it depending on where you work but the pay is generally low in alot of places.
