Orientation follows somewhere, sometimes with a tour of the facility, getting your ID along the way.

I know at Polk, all new hires start on Mondays. You come in and get your uniforms and accessories (handcuff case, OC case ect.), then you get your ID, then go to administration to fill out your forms including requesting what shift you would like to be on. (insurance ect...) Then after all that is done you get assigned somewhere on the compound for the rest of the day. It's usually on the yard or in master control, where you basically just observe whats going on. Then by the end of the day you will find out what shift you are on. Then you start a week long orientation that goes over the very basics and includes a tour of the facility. Then after orientation you report to your shift and get paired with a mentor. This mentor then works with you for about two weeks at the different assignments that you could possibly be assigned to. And thats basically it until you go to school (basic correctional officer school) which will be done within your first year.

Thanks, very informative. Gives me a good guideline as to what to expect, but I'm sure each facility has their own protocol. Do you bring what is assigned to you home each day (ie. OC holster, cuff case, etc.)?? Is there anything i should look into buying other than a good pair of black boots?? Thanks guys for all the help.

Psych, you guys have a psych test to pass??

The bureau's version of that is a credit check, HUGE numbers fail it...

That is the most common reason for not being hired on with the BOP, a credit check...

Mentor? Basically I mentored myself, as they moved all mentors to night when we went to twelve hour shifts.

Did my drug test, finger printing, and psych test today. That test is long and boring for sure. Now I just have to wait for the next call.

Re: How many of you work for NCDOC?

Of course I am only speaking for what happens at Polk. But you do keep all your equipment. You take home your handcuff case, minus handcuffs (we pass those on to incoming shifts and DOC policy prohibits the use of personal cuffs) OC case which you do keep your spray, and your glove pouch. At Polk, everyone carries a baton so we are issued a baton ring. Of course those are passed on at shift change. I highly recommend that you get a small flashlight (like a AA maglight) it helps during searches. I also recommend that you get a duty belt. The department issues you a regular pants belt, it's wider than regular belts and can hold your equipment; but a duty belt offers more support for your equipment and the hassle of having to repeatedly put on and remove your equipment. Shoot me your email address and I'll send you a pic of my duty belt and what I have on it.

Re: How many of you work for NCDOC?

Thanks you Officer Pedde, I'll look into different duty belts as well as a flash light and holder. I'll be a medium facility so I assume I'll have a baton as well.

Duty belts also transfer, distribute, & equalize the weight of your gear across the waist & hips, which is better than being lopsided. Its better than nothing, even though a Sam Browne belt would be more preferable, as a true Same Browne belt has shoulder straps while Duty Belts do not.
