Re: Greetings from NJ
Can't beat the pay or the benefits (at least until our next contract is negotiated). If you haven't taken the civil service test for corrections make sure that you take the next one. If you are considering a career in law enforcement this is a good option.

Re: Greetings from NJ
kgrace, not sure about when they'll test, but I do know that in the next 2 or 3 years the state doc will be loosing approx 1/5 of it's custody staff - so the need will be great soon. so definitely take it whenever it is given.
P.S - If you haven't guessed I am a state DOC SGT. |

Why is it that they will be losing 1/5 of their staff ? Retirement ? How does the state level compare to the federal level ? Should I look more towards the one and not the other ? |

Re: Greetings from NJ
Most will be retirements, along with the normal attrition rate. There were 2 prisons built in 1983 which lead to mass hirings. Those folks will soon be reaching 25 years which will lead to mass retirings. In response to you other question, State Corrections pays better than Federal, at least in NJ. My best advice is to shoot for State, but if Federal comes up first you can always transfer later. Good Luck
