MSG Sabalu (or Wil, as many of us knew him) was an Army CO who had been working at the "schoolhouse" in Ft Leonard Wood, MO. When he was promoted to Master Sergeant, he was chosen to go around the world inspecting military jails/prisons (sorta like ACA). He and a Colonel I served under were chosen to train the Afghan Army on corrections in a closed prison they were planning to open in order to send some Afghan detainees from Gitmo. Anyhow, the Afghan Army was keeping parimeter guard around the prison, and Wil, the Col. and 4 soldiers were coming out of the vehicle sallyport. An Afghan soldier (the Afghan Army later said he had a history of mental illness) opened fire on the 6 while they were trapped inside the vehicle sallyport. He managed to kill Wil and COL Harrison and injure the other 4 before other Afghan soldiers killed him. Wil left behind a wife (SFC in the Army) and 2 young children. Wil was a great man and a greater NCO.
