Re: FCI Berlin
Where in the heck did you come up with that figure?
There's no property tax in the country that high; 31% would mean a $100,000 home would have taxes of $31,000 a year. The tax rate in Berlin for 2007 was $27.89 per $1,000 valuation. The median home price is $119,000, so the average property tax bill is just over $3,300. That sounds high, but it is the only tax you pay. There is no state, county, or local sales or income tax. (Okay, there is a meals & rooms tax of 8%, but that mostly affects tourists.) Berlin, New Hampshire (NH) - Sperling's BestPlaces Compared to the rest of the country, Berlin (zip 03570)'s cost of living is 14.41% Lower than the U.S. average. Berlin (zip 03570) public schools spend $5,583 per student. The average school expenditure in the U.S. is $6,058. There are about 16 students per teacher in Berlin (zip 03570). Personally, I plan to live in Lancaster, but Berlin is okay too.

Meant to say something else, didn't mean percentage-wise. It's actually 30.07 per $1,000. I think that's the highest in NH. It's true that you don't pay state income taxes...yet. There are people working hard to change that in NH. You do pay a county tax, though; it's not much up in Berlin, at least. I've also been told Berlin won't be receiving the Boston salary table; they'll be receiving the "Rest of the USA" rate. Bogus. Last edited by BossMan; 08-26-2008 at 12:36 AM. |

Re: FCI Berlin
I'm not seeing much in the way of real estate, though. Most of the decent looking houses are well over $100,000 approaching $200,000. Maybe I'm spoiled living in the 'land that time forget Pennsylvania', but around here you can still buy a real nice house for $100-120,000. Any good links to real estate sites there?
Regardless, I'm not going to Berlin as a Bureau employee. I going to open up a no-frills hotel for thug families, a nice hotel for Bureau staff, and I'm going to start a tow-truck business to pull all of the visitors out of the snow banks and to jump start their vehicles because none of the idiots will think to have an engine block heater. Ah....my goal in life is to make money from visitors. I guess I worked too many quarters in the visiting room!! |

Remember, though: tax rate alone doesn't mean anything until you apply it to the valuation. You can live in Town A and pay exactly the same amount of property tax as you would in Town B, even though Town A has a rate of $20 and Town B has a rate of $30. The difference in rate reflects that Town B has cheaper property values. Quote:
As for the income tax, you're right: there are people actively trying to create one, and they've been busy spending out the wazoo in order to create a budget crisis to prove the "need" for an income tax. I've got friends working to stop them, though. Most of those clamoring for more taxes and spending were elected in 2006 by straight-ticket voting in a wave of anti-Bush sentiment. I don't expect most of them will be returned to office this November. Quote:
