Question E-Mail for Inmates ???

Have any of you folks heard that Bureau is looking at different vendors to allow inmates to use the internet to use only as email to communicate with family and friends only?

If so, what are your feelings on this? As for myself, I don't think it should be allowed, but maybe there may other benifits we may get (i.e., intel)?

I read something the other day that said that it will work just like the phone system. The person the inmate emails has to be on a list. In addition, they don't have actual INTERNET access. the only thing they have is the email. It will also be monitored by staff just like mail and phone.

Texarkana has had it for almost a year now. It seems to work pretty well. I can't tell that it's reduced the amount of snail mail we pass out, though.

Many locations have the new con e-mail system. I allows monitoring via sniffer programs and redundant staff review. Seems to work pretty well. I do think it has reduced snail mail, which goes away by 2010. In its place, all snail mail will be sent to a centralized facility, scanned, and e-mailed to the con.

Now, if we could just stop the unit team from giving those dang unmonitored phone calls. If I could call my people, they'd send money for my next FRP payment....Better yet, I'll tell you a few things. You tell the SIS. You look good and in return, you can let me call my people....Oh, you don't know Spanish, well, I'm not sayin' anything wrong or trying to introduce drugs or worse.

Wow! Sure would cut down in intro, but would we then have to place a "dumb" terminal in every cell? Our Pen guys are sooooo patient. They wouldn't mind another "Car" using the "mail" terminal before them...They all get along.
