Call me old fashioned but i do not agree with allowing inmates to have access to e-mail because alot of these younger kids coming into the system are already computer savvy and if they wanted to, they could figure out a way to access the internet. Its too high of a risk.

I think it is totally stupid!! Just another way of the bureau to cut back on staff I think, hardly any mail means hardly any mail room staff.......some "unknown" hacker, locked up, will eventually shut the whole Bureau system down.....oh well, that's why they get paid the big bucks!

As one of those mail room staff , I fear I have to back the BOP up on this one.

For security reasons it is easier to keep track of the contents of emails than to have a bunch of rushed Inmate Systems Officers(ISO) trying to decipher the handwritting and language of the thousands of pieces of mail that is dumped on the mailroom. Esp. during the holidays. A large chunk of mail simply doesnt get read because of time and volume.

With email their texts are stored and can be easily retrieved, and used against them if they say something stupid. Just ask Thorn - or the mayor of Detroit.

ISO staff in the mail room will decrease but cant be eliminated because inmates will still get legal mail, books, and packages. Staff will always recieve mail for their departments. Some ISOs will be kept inside to cover the Legal Instrument posts that got moved to Grandprairie.

It potentially sucks for me - but I get it.

Iowa was supposed to start a pilot project baed on the BOP model...........we have not yet.

ATG (the same company that makes your inmate banking & medical records system---and our records system) designed the software.

They are good. They are located in Des Moines----and they host our entire records system in their server farm.

I did some brainstorming with them 2000-2003 when we were setting up the records system. Computer geeks galore !

I asked my CMC boss about it today.

2011 all BOP facilities will have inmate email.

Nothing about changing how the mail room is ran.

Ohhh I can see the fights now over the damn terminals. Not to mention they will probably be destroyed with in a month by the inmates taking them apart to use as shanks or whatever else they have in their little minds. Then they will cry to the exec staff that they need to be replaced because afterall it is their RIGHT to have an operational terminal. Oh I feel and headache coming on.
