If you're a Dept Head during noon mainline, you are either scanning the inmates ID's as they move through the serving line or out in the hall with the COs shakin' down....No exceptions (well a few, but you know what I mean.)

That Unit Manager should do it witht the back up of any Officer/Staff walking by. Don't rely so heavely on the CO, everyone is responsible for the security of the institution.
This is my point. The whole thing starts with the officers. However, others can and SHOULD help as well. Too often there are those that stand and watch the officers, you hardly see any of them patting an inmate down. There are one to a few officers patting inmates as they exit the dining room.

The inmates are everyone's responsibility.

All it takes is just get one here and there, you don't have to get as many as we do. But to get one here and there would be great.

How about patting the one you just talked to?

We are custody, much of it is on us... But the effort would be greatly appreciated.

Another one is... I just saw this inmate doing this... YOU write a shot on him...

Why? I didn't see anything... I don't want the inmate to break the rules, but I don't want to lie about something I didn't see.

Please don't put in that position.

I agree 100% it is time the inmates began to remember that they are in PRISON, not the Holiday Inn. Time to make a change, one step at a time, but a step I will take.

Patting down Inmates coming out of chow is very important. Thats where they exchange contraband from other units.I go out and get my hands dirty with the C/O's.I agree reguardless of rank the safty and security of the facility is all of our jobs no matter who you are.

Re: Stand up and be counted - OFFICERS!!!

Who took me up on my challenge????

I am working Compound #2 (I didn't want to give up the Sunday pay)

I can see a BIG difference, other staff have commented on it as well.

Inmates are NOT allowed to:

Stand on the compound during the moves

Stand around on recalls

Trade items in front of their units during moves

Leave their shirt tails out, they must be tucked in - Rec clothing as well

No headphones worn on the compound (they can't hear with the music blaring)

When the compound is closed, IT IS CLOSED. If you miss the move - there will be another one in 1 HOUR.

Inmates are called across, if they miss appointments/school/work/what ever. Their detail foremen will have to request them and have them called across. The compound is CLOSED.

Moves have went from 10 - 11 -- 12 ---- 13+ minutes to around 6 or 7. It seems when you have about 10 - 14 officers telling you to keep moving - you really don't have time to hang out...

When the meals are completed, the last inmate sits down - 10 minutes later an open move is called. It gives them plenty of time to get to where they are going. They don't get to sit around and talk with their buddies for 30 or 40 minutes while the compound remains open. They have learned, if you want to eat, Get your tray, SIT AND EAT DON'T TALK. In fact, the dining room clears much much quicker than it did. Instead of having 50 inmates when the last inmate had a seat you have 10 or 15 and they thin out fast.

They were complaining they don't have enough time to eat, my solution...

Clean your rooms and dorm, move up in the feeding order - then you will have plenty of time.

I've stepped up and used some "Peer Pressure" with younger staff as well as some older staff, it is rubbing off.

SOOOOOOOO

Who has taken me up on my challenge and have you noticed a difference??

We've started making a point of patting them down when they try to stop and chat. That keeps them moving right along!

Re: Stand up and be counted - OFFICERS!!!

What a great thread, I know I'm a little late posting but I think it needed to be said, so thanks area51. I have stated in other posts that I was having some trouble, in my new post because the inmates were not used to being handled the way I handle them during my searches. This is largely in part to unit staff taking shortcuts while doing their job. I stuck to my guns, got a few guy's put on behavior mod in the strip cell and the problems stopped, and other staff started taking notice. Once I showed everyone the policy, and that the inmate had nothing coming when they complained about it, opinions changed. I had a co-worker tell me he tried doing a strip search my way, and the inmate gave him all sorts of grief over it. The Sgt. was called down to deal with the problem, and the inmate decided to be compliant rather than risk going into the strip cell. It does work, lead by example staff and inmates notice. I had a seg inmate tell me the other day that I messed everything up for him because when I'm in the wing, his people won't bring him stuff. If the inmate is bitching, you're doing your job right. Now if I could just get all my co-workers in my unit to team up, it's too clicky(sp), there is too much back biting going on, and it only hurts us as a unit.

Re: Stand up and be counted - OFFICERS!!!

OK, guys...

Who stepped up this quarter?

I am Compound #1 this coming quarter! (Was the #2, F/S off days. I took the #1 slot S/S off days, I can stand the loss of Sunday pay...)

I just fired 75% of my Compound orderlies, they didn't work to begin with. I had 87 of them, now I have about 20 or so... These guys work, anytime I am on the compound they are there. (Since I have no dead weight, I can pay them better as well as an incentive)

When I got on post there was an inmate that was making out the pay sheets and bonuses for OTHER INMATES!!

He was fired as well, he was hot. Seems he was getting a cut off of their pay and bonuses... OHHHHH WELL!

I have a GREAT #2 this coming quarter, he has about 4 or 5 years in and wants to fall in line with what I have going on now.

Inmates don't even bother slowing down on the compound now, no head phones, work days shirt tails are tucked in. There is no more complaining, they have gotten used to the way things run now. Staff enjoy moves that last 6 minutes instead of 15.

Inmates don't hassle the unit officer once the move is closed, they know I will run them back in

"Take it back in guys, the compound is CLOSED!, Get off of my compound!"

No arguments, they don't even ask. They are told to catch the next move or their foremen will call for them IF they need them...

I am looking forward to another GREAT quarter!
