I agree with you on the urinalysis, Spidey. I can't stand the thought of my tax dollars going to welfare recipients to be able to get more crack, booze and the lot. Then they procreate further and the vicious cycle continues.

As far as this thread goes, I thought you all wore protective gear all the time. How can the higher ups not see this as detrimental? Are they really that blind or do they not care?

The higher ups are in part idealists, who are more in the line of thought of many whom are psychologists, sociologists, or who have taken a certain percentage of their higher education in that area, who believe we are there for the reforming or reprogramming of the individual who is incarcerated. They at most times seem to not want to think that also we are law enforcement, who do indeed deal with predatory behavior; to the point that we need all the weaponry that is good to have inside of a secure environment. I have even heard from one AW during either a staff recall, (one of the few I have attended), or during annual refresher training refer to us as expendable. That alone shows the mindset of some of those who have reached SES level, or a little below that. They deem us the line staff as expendable, and someone who is to be exposed to the dangers with a bare minimum of equipment, to suit their purposes of reprogramming the individual felon.

Meanwhile they deem us responsible for security, with not enough resources to take care of security measures, which with that type of reasoning, a staff member in Atwater was killed, a few years back another staff member was nearly killed where I work at.

Then to top it off there are those who threaten write ups, if we do not wear the vest issued to us, when we finally get one. Yeah, threaten me for not wearing it in a secure environment, like the Control Center. I know it is supposed to be concealable, so he'll have to take my word for it there. If he demands entrance into control center just to find out if I have it on, it's on. Because I am not going to undo my shirt for him to see it. If he starts patting me on the back a lot after it's issued to me, maybe I should return the favor in kind. Just to see if I get written up for patting the Captain on the back, should he do that to me. I am sure I can find a lawyer who would have a hey day with that one. And, they have yet to answer concerning, the possibility of having to wear it in a escort position, where we are required to wear ballistic vests. To be forced into wearing both at the same time is ridiculous, and I will tell him so. I am a little incensed, and am going to call my liability insurance provider to forward that bit of information on to the lawyers who handle these issues.

Re: Federal Vest Legislation

I personaly would wear the vest if given one, but when working with older cons or harder ones don't you think the inmates are smart enough to just hit us in a place that is exposed and one that will be harder to provide critical medical attention? some where like the neck under the arms inner legs all the places we have major artires. even a shot in the temple or eye could be devestating. and I hope I am not giving out any pointers to any one I just feel like a vest is a band aid on the problem of not doing harder and more shakedowns. we need mas shakedowns at all institutions and at every security level not just housing units be common areas like the yard, gym ,libary unicor, chowhall and any other place that an inmate has acces to even for a moments time.
secondly they should at the verry least let us keep gun safes in our vechiles if they will not provide lockers.

please excuse my spelling and grammer, i do not know how to get the checker to work and I'm dam tired.

Re: Federal Vest Legislation

Expendable? You are expendable?

Since when is a decent, hard working, trying to protect the people in your community kind of person expendable?

Someone needs to wake up and smell the coffee! You need to have the tools and the ability to do what it takes to get the job done! If you need to shakedown--you should be allowed to do so. If you need to get rough with a rough character--my opinion is--go for it! If you need equipment to protect yourselves and those you work with, you should have it. D**n bleeding heart liberals. Poor pitiful I/M who can't help what they do. Just let them have their televisions, weights, rights. S***w their rights! They lost their rights when they committed the crimes they did to be where they are.

And you are expendable?

What a crock!
