Congress currently has two bills that are on the floor.

The first would stop all funding from the federal government to private prisons. Result would be all private prisons housing federal inmates would not have any allocated money to pay for them. This would mean no more federal inmates in private prisons

The second would require all private prisons to offer full disclosure to any data or information about their facilities that is required to be released by local, state, and federal facilities. Up to this point they have been exempt on explaining how they spend the money they are allotted to their prisons.

Even if the first one doesn't pass, I sure hope the second one does. One of my biggest problems with private prisons is the fact that they are not as accountable to lawmakers as a government organisation.

This would be great. Though I doubt the first one will pass. Can't get in the way of corporate America. Gotta pursue the great American dream and all that right?

Private prisons have a huge lobbying group and spend a lot of money to keep them private. I hope that both bills pass but I doubt it.

I would lean on the second one barely passing. The first bill I see quietly dying on or before the votes roll in.

While I would like to see the private joints eliminated (or at least forced to follow our standards), if the first one passed, the first question is going to be, "Okay, now what do we do with these inmates?"

I'm sure we could all come up with something creative, but the BOP just couldn't absorb them all under current operating procedures.

Exactly.... For future job purposes we would want this one to pass. BUT for current safety purposes I hope it doesn't.

Id like to see them both pass. However, we know that wont happen. I would like to see these private institutions have to report and disclose all information. In addition, if they are getting federal funds they should be regulated to ensure that they are following certain rules and regulations.

Re: H.R. 1889 and 1890

I was looking at an estimate from the BOP and currently there are approximately 9000 inmates in Private Prisons with an additional 4000 scheduled to go into them this year. It would be alot to absorb but if that money were put back into the BOP budget we could move forward with opening some of the facilities that are built and sitting empty due to funding.
