Re: Ohio DRC to begin Layoffs.

The way they are doing it is cutting non-bargaining unit first. If the non-bargaining employee started out as bargaining unit then they may drop back to their previous position as long as it has been within the last 5 years. After all the non-bargaining positions are cut, they are still looking at nearly 30 officers per institution being cut as well. Mind you, they are at record high population right now, with 2 less institutions. To all my brothers in the ODRC, hang in there guys and be safe. When the next Lucasville kicks off, hopefully all my brothers and sisters remain safe.

Thumbs down Re: Ohio DRC to begin Layoffs.

It will not be unusual to see more and more stories like this. First I think part of the problem is how we set budgets. We all know if we don't use it we loose it next year. With all expenses on the rise it is no wonder why our budget requests are bigger and bigger. (Kind of a catch 22). I think before the restructure of staff and lay offs, the states should take a good hard look at sentencing. Tooo much time for the petty stuff and not enough time on the hard stuff, plus if you look at misdemeanor vs. felony. Most of the nightly incarcerations are misdemeanors / give them a ticket and eliminate all the jails costs on this. If they don't show for the tickets....(felony). Ask OH Jef. County Sheriff Abdola how much it cost to house individuals. If you think an individual needs incarserated for a piticular type of crime then (make it a Felony). Next we incarcerate the lawless instead of making them work hard for atonement and the betterment of society. We need more chain gangs and less monetary compensation...
