Take a moment and think about how YOU caused the inmate to spit on you. Insure you find the root cause of your unprofessional behavior which caused the inmate to spit on you. Remember you will write a memo detailing what it is you did and how you will fix your behavior. (also list all staff present encase they fail to report the incident) Once you have accomplished the task of realizing what you did, ask the inmate respectfully and using the up most professionalism to "Please stop spitting on my Mister (insert name). I truly regret you feel this behavior is warranted and I would really appreciate it if you could stop depositing your body fluids into my face?" Remember to repeat the request several times. If the inmate's primary language is not English, continue repeating the request and summon a staff member who speaks the inmate's native language. if no staff are available, feel free to use an inmate as a translator. If the inmate continues to behave in a manner which is unpleasant attempt to remove yourself from the inmates range. If you are not able to simply release the inmate then attempt to remove yourself from the area. Continue to use your verbal interpersonal communications skills as you leave the area. OK I have to stop............................................. |

Re: Use of Force Discussion
That is exactly what our policy says "Use the minimal amount of force necessary to gain control of the situation." I do like the answers about the spitter. Control without abuse!

Yes. "Place" him on the ground. Never indicate that it may have required some level of force to "place" him on the ground. Light as a feather. Like falling on a water bed. No effort is too great to safeguard the tender feelings of our precious thugs.

Re: Use of Force Discussion
What if the thug, excuse me, I mean the "Offender," isn't wearing cuffs when he spits on you and continues to spit on you?

Re: Use of Force Discussion
Pepper spray? Perhaps the chemical agent will disinfect his saliva? Then "gently" place the restraints on him and if he continues, place him against a solid object (wall/floor) in order to face him away from you and avoid his spittle.

Re: Use of Force Discussion
An inmate, with no restraints on, and is not inside of a cell spits on you, its on like Donkey Kong. He is assaulting you and you are authorized to defend yourself. Until restraints are on the inmate, the threat is still there. Use of Force matrix.

Re: Use of Force Discussion
Lucky you. We don't get pepperspray--very much. Maybe if we were to trade our thugs for "Offenders" we would get pepperspray all the time?
