BOP Rookies and LEOSA

While in IF training, the older officers told us that you could not carry concealed until after you finished your one year probationary period. I am just curious if this is accurate.

Just to be clear, I am not asking if it is recommended or not to carry concealed while still on probation. I am asking whether it is against policy or the law.

We have an entire section on LEOSA in this forum. Read the law yourself. You will run into a gang of clowns at Leavenworth who bump their gumbs about a lot of things that they don't know anything about.

Don't you have a concealed carry permit from the State of Kansas? If not, get one. You will need the training that you get in order to qualify because BOP use of force training is just good enough to get you prosecuted.

Re: BOP Rookies and LEOSA

As soon as you are authorized by the agency to carry a firearm, you are covered by LEOSA.

The law is very simple. People like to complicate it by reading into it things that just aren't there.

Very true Cross. That is why it is a good thing to study law and policy and see for yourself. I am not saying be able to get a undergraduate degree from doing so, but it might save your legal backside and everything that goes with it.

I would also advise to get liability insurance, along with a LEOSA rider, unless it is already included in the liability insurance. There are sections in this forum that covers that as well.

NRA and Gun Owners of America are two good organizations to check out as well, and there are others. I just don't remember all of them, presently.

And, speaking of concealed carry, it is good to get a CCW/CCH permit, which allows you to carry independent of the bureau ID. At, least get insurance that helps with the LEOSA thing for off duty.

Re: BOP Rookies and LEOSA

Gentlemen,

I am a part-time FLEO and a police legal advisor in NJ. I have taught 6 or 7 seminars at local police academies on HR 218 so far. I understand BOP C.O.'s get their statutory arrest authority from 18 U.S.C 3050, but what is the cite to your authority to detect, deter, or investigate criminal activity.

I'd like to be able to tell LEOs who attend my seminars or my upcoming Internet webinar that you are covered and why. I'd also like to be able to add you to my Table of LEOs posted on my webpage at Helping to train those who protect and serve | Sheepdog Academy

Thx for any info you can provide.

While I was at FLETC, one of the instructors (a Lawyer ) nice guy I forgot his name though, told us once you graduate FLETC you can purchase and carry your weapon, OFF DUTY.

That's not required to be a qualified law enforcement officer, so I guess I don't understand the question.

Our coverage comes from the portion in bold:
"authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of, or the incarceration of any person for, any violation of law"

It's clearly PL 108-277. We should refer to it by its proper title.

I don't have a CCW for Kansas. I was a Deputy so I didn't need one. I'm considering getting one now, but the problem is that it costs $150, plus I would have to attend an 8 hour class that costs another $100. So $250 just so I can have a Kansas CCH permit that isn't even valid in a lot of states.
