PHS is even limited in regard to inmate discipline, (see PS 5270.07). They are not considered qualified law enforcement officers for concealed carry handgun, (see the BOP Director's Memo concerning LEOSA), which means that they must get CCW/CCH permit like anyone else who is not considered qualified law enforcement.

We have the largest number of PHS officers of any complex in the Bureau of Prisons so this topic gets revisited each year we have firearms qualifications.

You'd think people who dress like they are in the Navy would be able to shoot thugs. WTF

Even in the Army, and I assume the Navy, health care professionals do not carry firearms, (unless the rules have changed). Chaplains also do not carry firearms in the Army nor do they in the Bureau even though they are BOP employees, although in the Army their assistants carry a rifle, not so sure about religious service assistants. The Public Health Health Service has a web site if you want to look them up.

Very true boatdriver, but not all medical staff are PHS.

I sure as heck ain't PHS and you couldn't pay me enough to wear that crappy uniform. I qualify at ART and can work OT in a Tower if I want. Stay safe and watch your back.

I think about half to three quarters, (not exact), are PHS. We have some staff who are BOP. Yeah, they qualify, and are authorized to carry.

Yup, I stayed.

Not to "hi-jack" the thread, but I haven't been too impressed with what I've seen from PHS, with a couple of exceptions. I met Kendig, Hardley's Vet, and my arse is still warm from when he blew smoke up it.

Re: Federal Bureau of Prisons & LEOSA

Another issue w/ LEOSA is how many law enforcement agency heads are against the act. Most Federal Wardens are strongly opposed to not having "control" over their officers and their right to carry. And for the most part prosecutors, police and the public are not aware of LEOSA. I was very happy to see the first two LEOSA cases hold up but it seems to me all leosa has accomplished is if you are willing to get arrested, spend the night in jail, hire an attorney, endure a lengthy suspension at work and then have the charges dropped; you can carry concealed. I don't know if these people don't know of LEOSA or if they are just trying to discourage persons LEOSA applies to from carrying? I carry under LEOSA but am seriously considering going ahead and getting my CW permit, just to be on the safe side.

Has anyone sued yet for false imprisonment? How about the CO in Hawaii that was arrested? Did he go after anything from the BOP or local PD? If they have to pay off a few large settlements that will help them get things straightened out.
