You need to do more than hope -- you need to act by calling and writing your congressman.
Email and call and snail-mail. Do it now! United States House of Representatives, 110th Congress, 2nd Session

Re: H.R. 5674 Correctional Officer Safety Act of 2008
My letter:
Dear Congressman Hall, I am a federal law enforcement officer employed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, at the Federal Correctional Institution in Texarkana. I write today to urge you to co-sponsor and support H.R. 5674, the "Federal Correctional Workers Safety Act of 2008". After the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 passed with your support, the approximately 30,000 Bureau of Prisons employees who are "qualified law enforcement officers" under that Act, have been authorized to carry personal concealed firearms throughout the country. The one place they haven't been allowed to carry is to and from work, while they are in uniform and most easily identified as an unarmed target by anyone with a grudge against correctional workers. It has been BOP policy, not law, that has left employees disarmed while traveling to and from work. Bureau management has steadfastly refused to negotiate a policy that would allow secure storage of personal firearms. Thank you for your favorable consideration of this Resolution. |

Do you mind if I plagiarise that?

Re: H.R. 5674 Correctional Officer Safety Act of 2008
I have written by email to my Representative, and two Senators to initiate a companion bill to the one in the House Of Representatives. I also forwarded a copy of the act to my work email. I will see what it requires to get it passed around the institution. Perhaps Cross Timbers could be of help.
