Chicago Assault

There has been mention here of the 2006 assault of the MDC officers while they were on the way to their vehicles after their shift. I was just digging around in my files and found the CPL memo discussing the incident.

Here it is:

Quote:
American Federation of GovernmentEmployees
Council of Prison Locals
MCC CHICAGO - Local 3652

March 30, 2006

To: All Staff

/s/
From: Mike Rule, President, Local 3652

Subj : Assault on Officers

Brothers and Sisters,

I am very regretful to inform you of the staff that were assaulted/attacked in the parking lot located on the corner of Polk and Clark Street. On Wednesday, March 30, 2006, at approximately 10:30 p.m., after completing their tour of duty, six (6) of our Correctional Officers walked to the parking lot where their vehicles were parked. They noticed a group of twenty (20) individuals, who appeared of Hispanic descent carrying a flag, walk towards them.

Officer Maurice Martin was approached by one (1) of them who distracted his attention while another individual hit him with a foreign object from behind; he was also cut with something sharp. Several others joined in on the attack of Officer Martin. Officer Darryl Griffin went to the aid of Officer Martin. As a result of the attack, Mr. Martin received eleven (11) stitches to his mouth and seven (7) stitches to his right ear in addition to numerous bruises and swelling. Officer Martin received medical attention, was released, and is recovering at his residence. Officer Griffin was was hit in the mouth with a blunt object and received seven (7) stitches as a result of his injuries; he also received medical attention and was allowed to go home.

Brian Lowry, National President of Council of Prisons Local 33, has been contacted and he extends his regret that this incident occurred. He has also stated that he will do anything in his power to aggressively fight for the right of all employees in the Bureau of Prisons to be afforded the opportunity to store their personal weapons at the institution in which they work.

“Please remember to keep these individuals in your thoughts and prayers.”

Yeah we get screened everyday, but they'll let us park our guns on property. I see that happening. {says with sarcasm}. I honestly think some Bureau cheeseeater will get the HR vetoed.

Don't think that way! LEOSA took more than a year to get passed. Keep your congress person apprised as to how you feel. Tell that person that you want that bill to pass with that particular paragraph left in. Do it as a group.

maybe I am missing something, but would weapons in their vehicles really have helped?

Re: Chicago Assault

Maybe not. But, is it conceivable that they would under slightly different circumstances?

Last summer we had a former inmate tell his parents that he was going to Leavenworth to kill one of our officers, and an associate warden who had retired. He then robbed a bank in Virginia and headed West. He was caught by US Marshals before he made it to Missouri, but it could have turned out very differently.

The storage requirement we're seeking would be on government property. In an MDC like Chicago, that means inside the building. You'd get armed before having to leave the property.

At a typical prison, parking lot storage is fine with us, because we don't encounter the public between the building and our vehicles. The Chicago officers don't have that buffer zone; they have to leave work and walk on city streets to get to their parking area or commuter station.

Funny I don't recall that ever being mentioned in the news here (Chicago) what we do hear a lot of is officers attacking inmates and citizens- I guess the Tribune really does hate cops huh.
