New Castle Prison on Lockdown After Fight Between Inmates, Guards

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A state prison that was the site of a riot last year was locked down after three guards were treated for minor injuries after a fight with inmates.
Four to six inmates at the New Castle Correctional Facility fought with the guards during an outdoor exercise period Wednesday after an inmate left the recreation area, said Trina Randall, a spokeswoman for the GEO Group Inc., the company that is contracted to run the facility.

An argument turned into a pushing and shoving match that lasted about a minute and a half, said Randy Koester, a spokesman for the Indiana Department of Correction.

"The incident that occurred the other night was quite minor," Randall said.

Koester said Friday that the prison about 45 miles east of Indianapolis was being taken off lockdown in stages and he expected it to return to normal operations over the weekend.

Eight inmates and two staff members at the prison were injured during an April 24 riot in which hundreds of prisoners burned mattresses and broke windows. The disturbance occurred six weeks after inmates from Arizona arrived as part of a deal between the states.

Twenty-seven Arizona inmates and one from Indiana were charged after the riot. Some of the Arizona inmates who were involved in the riot were sent back to that state.

The GEO Group is based in Boca Raton, Fla., and operates more than 60 correctional facilities in the U.S., according to the company's Web site.

Seems like this is the norm for many of those Private prisons. Maybe its just me but it seems like they are in the news a lot.

The Government has no business privatising anything that requires public trust. Corporations are after one thing and one thing only: Money. Where is the easiest place to skimp? Personnel and training. I feel sorry for anyone that works in a private prison and hopefully the trend toward privatisation will be derailed soon.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I've always said that the privatized prison system goes beyond money and training and safety, it's fundamentally wrong.

Same goes for Blackwater and other pseudo-military contractors.

I heard recently that Blackwater is fielding a full Combat Battalion that they can drop anywhere in the world in 18 hours. They have offered their services to Darfar and the like. They make movies about **** like that and it always ends with the contractors releasing a giant killer robot that takes over the city, or zombies.

We're straying OT here, but let me clarify that I have no problem with private armies, so long as they pay their own way. The term "company" is the same in business and military lingo. Military "companies" were started and funded by private individuals.

If the Congress had passed Ron Paul's (100% Constitutional !) act issuing Letters of Marque and Reprisal against Al Qaeda (essentially a bounty on bin Laden), ObL would have been toast long ago. Taxpayers would have saved a fortune, the job would have been done, and our soldiers wouldn't be over there getting shot at for building roads.
